Kay Francis Photo Gallery: Blc. Fortune

Parentage: Lc. Memoria Albert Heinecke × Blc. Xanthette (Stewart Inc., 1963)
Current nomenclature: Rlc. Fortune

Blc. Fortune was registered in 1963 by Fred A. Stewart, Inc. Most of the awarded cultivars are unknown today and are not attested by good quality photographs. The Stewart's catalogues might fill in some of the gaps. The known awards (mainly ODC and AOS) are:

  • 'Doubloon del Rey', AM/AOS, Fred A. Stewart, Hollywood, June 14, 1965, photos in OrchidPro and OrchidWiz, but not of good quality.
  • 'Gold Dust', HCC/ODC, Roy M. Field, Long Beach, June 28, 1965.
  • 'Golden Radiance', HCC/ODC, Fred A. Stewart, Inc., Long Beach, June 28, 1965.
  • 'Yellow Moon', HCC/ODC, Fred A. Stewart, Inc., Long Beach, July 26, 1965.
  • 'Golden Fantasy', HCC/ODC, Fred A. Stewart, Inc., Long Beach, July 26, 1965, likely award photo image #55274 in OrchidWiz.
  • 'Kimberley', HCC/AOS, Fred A. Stewart, Inc., Hollywood, August 9, 1965.
  • 'Legacy', AM/AOS, Earl W. Miller, Hollywood, June 13, 1966, award photo in OrchidPro and OrchidWiz.
  • 'Golden Throne', HCC/AOS, Fred A. Stewart, Inc., Hollywood, July 11, 1966, several published photos, but none of them is apparently the award photo; also, the existing photos show considerable variation in the lip, even on the same inflorescence.
  • 'Shanghai Lady', AM/AOS, Fred A. Stewart, Inc., Hollywood, August 8, 1966, the award slide has survived and is superior to the published photos.
  • 'Zoe', HCC/AOS, A. C. Zimmerman, Hollywood, September 12, 1966.
  • 'Marika', HCC/ODC, P. Kasimatis, Long Beach, June 26, 1967.
  • 'Golden Land', HCC/AOS, Fred A. Stewart, Inc., Hollywood, July 8, 1968.
  • 'Spellbound', HCC/AOS, Fred A. Stewart, Inc., Hollywood, July 8, 1968.
  • 'Spellbound', AM/AOS, Fred A. Stewart, Inc., Long Beach, July 28, 1975, award photo is excellent.
  • 'King Midas', AM/AOS, Mr. and Mrs. P. G. Barnett, Los Angeles, August 11, 1975.
  • 'Grandview', AM/AOS, Mr. and Mrs. P. G. Barnett, Long Beach, December 27, 1976.
  • 'Golden Radiance', AM/HOS, Masato Yamada, Honolulu, June 1, 1978, photo is overexposed, the tepals appear almost white.
  • 'Oviedo', HCC/AOS, Claudia Walworth, Orlando, August 9, 2009, award photo is good but likely a bit too dark.

The best characterized and most distinctive of the awarded cultivars is surely 'Spellbound', which Kay had in her collection. But there are at least two or three other similar plants in her slides, one identified as Fortune 'Golden Throne'. We believe these unidentified or ambigously identified plants are cultivars of Fortune, but beyond that, we can't be sure.
