Kay Francis Photo Gallery: Cattleya Bow Bells

Parentage: C. Edithiae x C. Suzanne Hye

Kay had cultivar 'Honolulu' and at least one seedling from selfing this cultivar, apparently never awarded, but illustrated in the AOS Bulletin 27(4):243 (April, 1958) in an article by D. H. Niimoto and L. F. Randolph, "Chromosome Interitance in Cattleya". The article implies that 'Honolulu', a confirmed tetraploid, was selfed by Rivermont Orchids, and on p. 280 of the same issue, seedlings of C. Bow Bells "Honolulu strain", were offered for sale by Carter and Holmes Orchids. Kay obtained an unnamed cultivar from the Orchid Company of Altadena in April, 1956. She asked Jerry Kulaja if he had any cultivars of Bow Bells, and obtained from him " 'Snow River' AM/AOS" (actually 'Snowy River' AM/ODC, awarded December, 1957 when exhibited by Gordon M. Hoyt Orchids) on May 24, 1967. The origin of her cultivar 'Dainty' is unknown, unless it was the plant she obtained from the Orchid Company of Altadena.
