C. trianae 'Blue Bird' F3 seedlings (197301H7_14)

C. trianae 'Blue Bird' F3 seedlings, January, 1973. Kay's "Journal" shows the selfing of 'Blue Bird' was her cross #21, the seed pod "sawed" October 15, 1962. She considered the progeny as "F3" seedlings, implying that she considered 'Blue Bird' as the F2 generation, implying in turn that 'Blue Bird' was the result of a cross from a natural collection. She noted there were very few progeny from her F3 generation, but they were "excellent". ‘Blue Bird’ was exhibited by Armacost & Royston at Regional Monthly Judging in Hollywood, CA, February 8, 1960, where it received HCC/AOS. A likely award photo for 'Blue Bird' is found in OrchidWiz, image #55945, attributed to the collection of Steve McNerney. A trianae cultivar ‘Kay Mine’ was used by Stewart’s as a parent for later "blue" crosses, and Kay circled a mentions of "Kay Mine" in a Stewart’s catalogue, adding the notation “Mine Kay”. The cultivar used by Stewart's must have been one of the F3 seedlings.
