Orchid Judging in Long Beach, 1954 and Beyond!

American Orchid Society Judging at Long Beach,

1975

We were able to recover photos for 63 of the 71 awards apparently conferred by the Long Beach site. (Another seven awards that OrchidPro attributes to Long Beach are actually from other sites, based on their original publication in Awards Quarterly, and therefore not counted in the total of 71.) There are many discrepancies in the award numbers, dates, and other facts, at least in part due to the publication of several sets of duplicate award numbers in Awards Quarterly. While attempting to untangle these issues, we discovered that there are awards in OrchidPro attributed to the Long Beach site, but encoded in the database in such a way that they cannot be retrieved by any search for "long beach". As the awards photos were created, as far as we know, as part of the AOS judging program and for the use of AOS and its judging program, the implied copyright, if any, should remain with AOS, and, as an AOS affiliated society, SCOS presents them here with that understanding. We would very much like to obtain photos from the other eight awards, possibly from collections of AOS award slides that were sent out to other judging centers and affiliate societies over the years.

Awards that require corrections in OrchidPro, or that are not found at all in OrchidPro, are indicated by a warning sign:

Awards where editing or replacement of the photos in OrchidPro should be considered are indicated by a camera icon:

January 27, 1975:

Paph. fairrieanum 'Hagee' FCC/AOS

AOS Award No. 19750159 Paphiopedilum fairrieanum f. bohlmannianum (album) 'Hagee', FCC/AOS 90 points, Hagee's World of Orchidaceae. Published in Awards Quarterly 7(2):44-45 (1976) without a photo. OrchidPro has complete information but lacks photo.

Oncidium Golden Ransom 'Solana' AM/AOS, new scan from Pacific South award slides

AOS Award No. 19750160 Oncidium Golden Ransom 'Solana', AM/AOS 82 points, R. B. Dugger. Published in Awards Quarterly 7(2):45 (1976) without a photo. OrchidPro has complete information and color photo. This hybrid was originally registered as an Odontoglossum in 1967.

Phalaenopsis Rhoda Fredricks 'Malibu' HCC/AOS, new scan from Pacific South award slides

AOS Award No. 19750161 Phalaenopsis Rhoda Fredricks 'Malibu', HCC/AOS 77 points, Arthur Freed Orchids. Published in Awards Quarterly 7(2):45 (1976) without a photo. OrchidPro has complete information but lacks photo.

AOS Award No. 19750162 Lycaste macrophylla var. desboisiana 'Wise', CCM/AOS 86 points, Edwin and Donna Wise. Published in Awards Quarterly 7(2):45 (1976) without a photo. OrchidPro has complete information but lacks photo. As for the other Lycaste awards for Southern California, this one is missing from the Pacific South awards slide collection.

[OrchidPro and OrchidWiz show an award 19750483 attributed to the Long Beach site for Phalaenopsis Lucifer 'Crestwood' on January 27, 1975. However, when the color photo from this award was featured on the cover of the June, 1976 issue of the AOS Bulletin, the award was described as follows: "The front-cover subject this month, Phalaenopsis Lucifer (violacea × Mahinhin [equestris × lueddemanniana]) received an Award of Merit (81 points) for Crestwood Orchids at the Mid-America Supplemental Judging in Atlanta, Georgia on June 14, 1975." Awards Quarterly 7(4):103 (1976) says this award is from Atlanta monthly judging and includes a black and white photo. We were unable to find any reason for the misattribution of this award to the Long Beach judging site.]

February 24, 1975:

Angulocaste Olympus 'Honey' AM/AOS, new scan from Pacific South award slides

AOS Award No. 19750185 Angulocaste Olympus 'Honey', AM/AOS 82 points, Eugene A. Casey. Published in Awards Quarterly 7(2):54 (1976) without a photo. OrchidPro has complete information and color photo. There are some extraneous bluish spots or marks on the slide from the Pacific South awards slide collection.

Phalaenopsis Mattie Mae Chambers 'Malibu Gem' HCC/AOS, new scan from Pacific South award slides

AOS Award No. 19750186 Phalaenopsis Mattie Mae Chambers 'Malibu Gem', HCC/AOS 78 points, Arthur Freed Orchids. Published in Awards Quarterly 7(2):54 (1976) without a photo. ORchidPro has complete information but lacks photo.

Phalaenopsis Barbara Freed Saltzman 'Malibu Cove' HCC/AOS, new scan from Pacific South award slides

AOS Award No. 19750187 Phalaenopsis Barbara Freed Saltzman 'Malibu Cove', HCC/AOS 78 points, Arthur Freed Orchids. Published in Awards Quarterly 7(2):54 (1976) without a photo. OrchidPro has complete information but lacks photo.

Phalaenopsis Pinkridge 'Malibu' HCC/AOS, new scan from Pacific South award slides

AOS Award No. 19750188 Phalaenopsis Pinkridge 'Malibu', HCC/AOS 78 points, Arthur Freed Orchids. Published in Awards Quarterly 7(2):54 (1976) without a photo. OrchidPro has complete information but lacks photo.

Phalaenopsis Milkmaid 'Helen Vandeberg' HCC/AOS, new scan from Pacific South award slides

AOS Award No. 19750189 Phalaenopsis Milkmaid 'Helen Vandeberg', HCC/AOS 78 points, Zuma Canyon Orchids. Published in Awards Quarterly 7(2):54 (1976) without a photo. OrchidPro has complete information but lacks photo. The award slide calls this hybrid Milk Maid instead of Milkmaid.

Rhyncholaeliocattleya Xanthette 'Lemon-Lime' HCC/AOS, new scan from Pacific South award slides

AOS Award No. 19750190 Rhyncholaeliocattleya Xanthette 'Lemon-Lime', HCC/AOS 77 points, Fred A. Stewart, Inc. Published in Awards Quarterly 7(2):54 (1976) without a photo. OrchidPro has complete information but lacks photo. The award description indicates "two chartreuse blossoms on one spike; concolor save for a slight tinge of red on labellum; excellent substance". This hybrid was originally registered as a Brassolaeliocattleya in 1948, then changed to Rhynchosophrocattleya in 2007, and finally (?) to Rhyncholaeliocattleya. The award slide bears the Long Beach sequence number 284 and shows the date February 24, 1975, with two flowers as required by the award description (one flower is almost hidden behind the other), so it is clearly the official award slide, even though the photo below, from OrchidWiz, showing only a single flower, has the appearance of being an award photo, and there are no other known awards for this cultivar.

Rhyncholaeliocattleya Xanthette 'Lemon-Lime' HCC/AOS, photo from OrchidWiz, attributed to McNerney collection, image #55565, but evidently not the award photo

Paphiopedilum Meadowlark 'De Emma Sue' HCC/AOS, new scan from Pacific South award slides

AOS Award No. 19750191 Paphiopedilum Meadowlark 'De Emma Sue', HCC/AOS 77 points, Zuma Canyon Orchids. Published in Awards Quarterly 7(2):54 (1976) without a photo. OrchidPro has complete information but lacks photo.

Vanda Piswong 'Zuma Canyon Blue' HCC/AOS, new scan from Pacific South award slides

AOS Award No. 19750192 Vanda Piswong 'Zuma Canyon Blue', HCC/AOS 75 points, Zuma Canyon Orchids. Published in Awards Quarterly 7(2):55 (1976) without a photo. OrchidPro has complete information but lacks photo. This hybrid was formerly an Ascocenda.

Cattlianthe Jewel Box 'Crimson Glory' CCM/AOS, new scan from Pacific South award slides

AOS Award No. 19750193 Cattlianthe Jewel Box 'Crimson Glory', CCM/AOS 90 points, Fred A. Stewart, Inc. Published in Awards Quarterly 7(2):55 (1976) without a photo. OrchidPro has complete information and color photo. This hybrid was originally registered as a Sophrolaeliocattleya in 1962, then changed briefly in 2007 to Guarisophleya, immediately after which the genus Sophronitis was suppressed, turning it into a Cattlianthe.

Cattlianthe Jewel Box 'Crimson Glory' CCM/AOS, from OrchidPro

[A group of four awards are found in OrchidPro with the date February 24, 1975, supposedly from Long Beach, but the award numbers place them in 1976, and they are actually from Seattle/Tacoma monthly judging and not from Long Beach. They are correctly listed in Awards Quarterly 8(1):44-45 (1977), the actual judging date February 25, 1976. The affected awards, incorrectly placed at Long Beach and incorrectly dated February 24, 1975, are: 19760137 and 19760138, Paphiopedilum delenatii 'Maybrook' AM/AOS and CCM/AOS; 19760139, Masdevallia Falcata 'Vashon Sunset' AM/AOS; and 19760140, Miltoniopsis Bremen 'Springtime' HCC/AOS. This series of errors arose when the headings indicating a change of judging venue in Awards Quarterly 8(1):43 and 8(1):44 (1977), first to Tampa, FL, and then to Steattle, WA, were missed when the data were extracted into the AOS awards database.

March 24, 1975:

[OrchidPro shows two awards, 19750211 and 19750212, wrongly attributed to the Long Beach judging site for March 24, 1975. They are actually from the Tampa, FL site on March 28, 1975. In Awards Quarterly 7(3):73 (1976), the two awards from Tampa immediately follow the March 24, 1975 awards from Long Beach. Evidently, when the data were entered into the AOS awards database, the change of venue and date specified in Awards Quarterly were missed.]

Oncidium Eric Kuhn 'Jamocha' AM/AOS, new scan from Pacific South award slides

AOS Award No. 19750458 Odontocidium Eric Kuhn 'Jamocha' , AM/AOS 84 points, Allen L. Iseri. Published in Awards Quarterly 7(3):72 (1976) without a photo, with award designated 75-458. However, this award is in OrchidPro as Award No. 19750925 with correct data but no photo, including "Pacific South Regional Supplemental Monthly Judging Long Beach, CA" as the "event", but not retrievable as a Long Beach award through any combination of search parameters we could find. Not found in OrchidWiz. (These items are recovered with the "event search" specified as "pacific south regional supplemental monthly judging" but not with any longer search string. "Center search" using the selection "Pacific South Judging Center" does not recover them. "Location search" fails to recover them using any of the words present in the "event" display for these awards.) The description from Awards Quarterly, which needs to be added to OrchidPro 19750925, is: "Seedling blooming for the first time; forty-eight flowers and three buds on upright spike; light cream tepals heavily marked in deep maroon on both front and reverse; lip yellow, marked with maroon; column yellow with deep maroon marks; near perfect arrangement". Measurements are also included. Now correctly an Oncidium.

Phalaenopsis Natasha 'Eye-Dee' AM/AOS, new scan from Pacific South award slides

AOS Award No. 19750459 Phalaenopsis Natasha 'Eye Dee' , AM/AOS 82 points, Irene Dobkin. Published in Awards Quarterly 7(3):72 (1976) without a photo, with award designated 75-459. However, this award is in OrchidPro as Award No. 19750926 with correct data but no photo, but not retrievable as a Long Beach award through any combination of search parameters we could find. Not found in OrchidWiz. The description of this plant is also part of the conflated description found in OrchidPro award 19750460, see below. The correct description of Natasha 'Eye Dee', from Awards Quarterly 7(3):72 (1976), is "Eleven flowers with white background entirely marked with concentric, maroon markings, two spikes; lip bright thistle, side lobes maroon; substance exceptionally heavy, texture excellent".

Dendrobium White King 'Hiroshima' AM/AOS, new scan from Pacific South award slides

AOS Award No. 19750460 Dendrobium White King 'Hiroshima' , AM/AOS 82 points, Andy T. Yamamoto. Published in Awards Quarterly 7(3):72-73 (1976) without a photo, with award designated 75-460. However, this award is in OrchidPro as Award No. 19750927 with correct identification (but no description), but not retrievable as a Long Beach award through any combination of search parameters we could find. In OrchidWiz as award 19750460.

Masdevallia Falcata 'Signal' AM/AOS, new scan from Pacific South award slides

AOS Award No. 19750461 Masdevallia Falcata 'Signal' , AM/AOS 81 points, Beall Orchid Company. Published in Awards Quarterly 7(3):73 (1976) without a photo, with award designated 75-461. However, this award is in OrchidPro as Award No. 19750928 with correct data but no photo, but not retrievable as a Long Beach award through any combination of search parameters we could find. Not found in OrchidWiz.

Cymbidium Sunshine Falls 'Jade Queen' AM/AOS, new scan from Pacific South award slides

AOS Award No. 19750462 Cymbidium Sunshine Falls 'Jade Queen' , AM/AOS 80 points, Andy T. Yamamoto. Published in Awards Quarterly 7(3):73 (1976) without a photo, with award designated 75-462. However, this award is in OrchidPro as Award No. 19750929 with correct data but no photo, but not retrievable as a Long Beach award through any combination of search parameters we could find. The AOS award is not found in OrchidWiz, but there is a BM/CSA award about a week later, the same plant, with a color photo. Also, a color photo of this cultivar, evidently the award photo, was published in the AOS Bulletin 47(11):1026, November, 1978, in an article on Cymbidium breeding by Paul Gripp and James Rose. The photographer is credited as Richard Clark.

Oncidium Taw 'Red Knight' HCC/AOS, new scan from Pacific South award slides

AOS Award No. 19750463 Odontioda Taw 'Red Knight' , HCC/AOS 79 points, Allen L. Iseri. Published in Awards Quarterly 7(3):73 (1976) without a photo, with award designated 75-463. However, this award is in OrchidPro as Award No. 19750930 with correct data but no photo, but not retrievable as a Long Beach award through any combination of search parameters we could find. Not found in OrchidWiz. Now correctly an Oncidium.

Cymbidium Allacel 'Early Beauty' HCC/AOS, new scan from Pacific South award slides

AOS Award No. 19750464 Cymbidium Allacel 'Early Beauty', HCC/AOS 78 points, Fred A. Stewart, Inc. Published in Awards Quarterly 7(3):73 (1976) without a photo. OrchidPro has complete information but lacks photo.

Cymbidium Fassuva 'Red Sensation' HCC/AOS, new scan from Pacific South award slides

AOS Award No. 19750465 Cymbidium Fassuva 'Red Sensation', HCC/AOS 77 points, Fred A. Stewart, Inc. Published in Awards Quarterly 7(3):73 (1976) without a photo. OrchidPro has complete information but lacks photo.

Cymbidium Sleeping Beauty 'Golden Queen' HCC/AOS, new scan from Pacific South award slides

AOS Award No. 19750466 Cymbidium Sleeping Beauty 'Golden Queen', HCC/AOS 75 points, Fred A. Stewart, Inc. Published in Awards Quarterly 7(3):73 (1976) without a photo. OrchidPro has complete information but lacks photo.

[Note: A total of 15 awards are recovered in OrchidPro using the "Event Search" string, "pacific south regional supplemental monthly judging", with dates ranging from June 4, 1968 to January 22, 1981. All need to be reviewed and corrected in OrchidPro so that they can be recovered by searching "event" or "location" as "long beach", and we believe all of them are Long Beach awards. In OrchidPro, these 15 show various "Event" values: "A"; "Pacific South Regional Supplemental Monthly Judging Long Beach, CA"; "Pacific South Regional Supplemental Monthly Judging (Long Beach, CA)"; "Long Beach"; "Long Beach, CA" — thus demonstrating that the search function is not looking at the text actually displayed to the public, but to some inaccessible, internal data element. This disconnect between data entered into the database and data displayed in OrchidPro is a serious flaw that gets in the way of accurate and accessible award data. There is also a "More Details" tab in OrchidPro. For these 15 awards, the "Judging Center" on the "More Details" tab shows "Unlisted Judging Center" or "Predated AQplus Centers", but searching on "Unlisted Judging Center" also fails to recover them. "Event" is displayed in some cases as blank, in others as "Pacific South Regional Supplemental Monthly Judging", or "Pacific South Regional Supplemental Monthly Judging (Long Beach, CA)", and the "Event" listed with the "More Details" tab does not always match the "Event" listed on the main display. "Location" is not listed at all for the "More Details" tab.]

April 28, 1975:

[Awards Quarterly shows the year as 1976 for this group, an obvious typographical error. Note also that this group, comprising awards 19750458-19750462, duplicates the original award numbers for March 24, 1975.]

Paphiopedilum lowii 'Xlnt' AM/AOS, new scan from Pacific South award slides

AOS Award No. 19750458 Paphiopedilum lowii 'Xlnt', AM/AOS 87 points, Imogene and Carl Keyes. Published in Awards Quarterly 7(4):94 (1976) without a photo. OrchidPro has complete information but lacks photo. OrchidWiz has an award record for this number that may reflect the past duplication of award numbers — the basic data for Paph. lowii 'Xlnt', but with a description that refers to Odontocidium Eric Kuhn 'Jamocha', see above, in March, 1975. In addition, OrchidWiz has the award record for Paph. lowii 'Xlnt' under the award number 19760458, but with the correct date in 1975, with the correct description and other data.

AOS Award No. 19750459 Phalaenopsis Dusky Rouge 'Goodie', AM/AOS 87 points, Imogene and Carl Keyes. Published in Awards Quarterly 7(4):94 (1976) without a photo. Not found in Pacific South awards slide collection, and the photo in OrchidPro is in fact the photo of Phal. Natasha 'Eye-Dee' AM/AOS, current AOS Award Number 19750926 (see above). The original award number, as noted above in the March, 1975 awards, is a duplicate of the award for Phalaenopsis Natasha 'Eye-Dee', which is currently found in OrchidPro under 19750926. However, in OrchidWiz, there are two entries for the present award for Dusky Rouge 'Goodie'. The first, with the correct date April 28, 1975, under number 19750459, is identified as the plant exhibited by Imogene and Carl Keyes, but the description and measurements are for Natasha 'Eye-Dee', this entry matching what is now found in OrchidPro under 19750459. The second entry in OrchidWiz has the incorrect date April 28, 1976 (repeating the typographical error in Awards Quarterly 7(4):94 (1976)), under award number 19760954 (this award number is also found in the AOS Awards Index 1932-1989, reflecting the resolution of the duplicated award numbers at the time the index was prepared), with the correct description and measurements for Dusky Rouge 'Goodie'. However, this second entry in OrchidWiz is not found in OrchidPro. The solution to this puzzle is that award number 19750459 needs to be corrected with the description and measurements from Awards Quarterly 7(4):94 (1976), and the photo attached to that award needs to be removed and then added instead to award number 19750926. The correct description for 19750459 is: "One spike carrying four dusky, rose-lavender flowers with underlying yellow tint, evenly speckled overall; lip has underlying cream color spotted overall and with dark lavender apex."

Vanda Peggy Foo 'Ultraviolet' HCC/AOS, new scan from Pacific South award slides

AOS Award No. 19750460 Vanda Peggy Foo 'Ultraviolet', HCC/AOS 76 points, Norito Hasegawa. Published in Awards Quarterly 7(4):94 (1976) without a photo. In OrchidPro, 19750460 is labeled as Vanda Peggy Foo 'Ultraviolet', April 28, 1975, exhibitor Dr. Norito Hasegawa, at Pacific South Supplemental Monthly Judging, Long Beach, CA. However, the description for this award in OrchidPro includes text for three separate plants: (1) "Eleven flowers with white background entirely marked with concentric maroon markings, two spikes; lip bright thistle, side lobes maroon; substance exceptionally heavy, texture excellent"; (2) "Eighteen flowers of overlapping form and good substance, one spike; tepals a moderate purple-red, lip purple with yellow side lobes"; and (3) "One spike with one bloom; deep fire engine red shading to bright orange with overlay of red suffusion; bright red lip". The second plant mentioned in the description matches the description in OrchidWiz of award 19750955, Vanda Peggy Foo 'Ultraviolet', but the award date is listed as April 28, 1976, thus repeating the typographical error in Awards Quarterly 7(4):94-95 (1976). In OrchidPro, the award 19750955 does not exist. The third plant matches the description of Masdevallia Falcata 'Signal', see above, first item in March 24, 1975 awards and in OrchidPro as Award No. 19750928. The first plant turns out to be Phalaenopisis Natasha 'Eye Dee', see above, in the group for March 24, 1975, in OrchidPro as Award No. 19750926.

Paphiopedilum Novenka 'Tweed' HCC/AOS, new scan from Pacific South award slides

AOS Award No. 19750461 Paphiopedilum Novenka 'Tweed', HCC/AOS 76 points, Clark Day Jr. Orchids. Published in Awards Quarterly 7(4):95 (1976) without a photo. Two versions of same award are found in OrchidWiz, apparently: 19750461, Pacific South Reg. Supp. Monthly Judging, Long Beach, California April 28, 1975 (a red flower), and 19750956, Regional Supplemental Monthly Judging, Long Beach, California, April 28, 1976 (apple-green flower, but this one not in OrchidPro!). The April 28, 1976 date should be incorrect, as it falls on a Wednesday instead of the expected fourth Monday of the month, but we still have to establish if the award information found in OrchidWiz for 19750956 is actually from the Long Beach judging site. We suspect the one identified as 19750956 is the "true" award, as the description mentions "heavily dotted", which would be appropriate both for the spotted parentage of this hybrid as well as the cultivar name. But if that conclusion is correct, what is 19750461? We now believe that the award 19750461 in OrchidWiz is in fact a mislabeled version of the award for Masdevallia Falcata 'Signal', see above, found by name and date in OrchidPro under award number 19750928. The correct award information for Paphiopedilum Novenka 'Tweed' is that associated with award 19750956 in OrchidWiz, which needs to be added to OrchidPro.

In fact, the situation in OrchidPro is even more confused. The description for 19750928 actually refers to three different awards (with various typographical errors): "Sixty-four flowers with snow-ehite tepals, six buds; lip white, fully suffused (except for edges) pale lemon-yellow; maroon blotches deep in throat; column lime-green with snow-white pollen cap. One Spike with one bloom; deep, fire engine red shading to bright orange with overlay of red suffusion, bright red lip. Beautifully arranged, arching spikes; 105 flowers, four spikes open and one unopened; lime-green tepals, faint red suffusion and stripingg at base; lip yellow with random spotting and striping of maroon; green column with white pollen cap." The second part of the description matches the description in OrchidWiz for 19750461. What are the other two plants in this description? The first part of the description turns out to match the description in OrchidWiz for Dendrobium White King 'Hiroshima', see above, that is missing in the OrchidPro entry for that award, 19750927. The third part of the description matches the description for 19750462 in Orchid Pro, for Oncidium Crislette 'White Satin', see below.

Oncidium Crislette 'White Satin' HCC/AOS, new scan from Pacific South award slides

AOS Award No. 19750462 Oncidium Crislette 'White Satin', HCC/AOS 75 points, Imogene and Carl Keyes. Published in Awards Quarterly 7(4):95 (1976) without a photo. OrchidPro has complete information but lacks photo. This hybrid was originally registered by the Keyes as an Odontioda in 1975.

May 19, 1975:

Awards Quarterly shows the year for this group as 1976, an obvious typographical error.

Paphiopedilum curtisii 'Black Monarch' AM/AOS

AOS Award No. 19750463 Paphiopedilum curtisii 'Black Monarch', AM/AOS 81 points, Norito Hasegawa. Published in Awards Quarterly 7(4):97 (1976) without a photo. OrchidPro has complete information and color photo

AOS Award No. 19750464 Odontioda Sheila Hands 'Orange Prince', HCC/AOS 78 points, R. B. Dugger. Published in Awards Quarterly 7(4):98 (1976) without a photo, as award 75-464. This award is not found in OrchidPro. OrchidWiz shows this award under the number 19750959 (this number likewise not found in OrchidPro), but with the date May 19, 1976, which is incorrect. Neither date in OrchidPro leads to this award. Not found in the Pacific South awards slide collection, at least under this name. The correct description is "Sixteen flowers on two spikes, plus one in bud; flowers colored a medium henna-brown with cream-yellow patterns on tepals, uniform markings; cream-colored lip with brown markings and pale lavender suffusion at apex, lavender column."

Phalaenopsis Bettylee Burke 'Kathy Wise' HCC/AOS, new scan from Pacific South award slides

AOS Award No. 19750465 Phalaenopsis Bettylee Burke 'Kathy Wise', HCC/AOS 78 points, E. E. Wise. Published in Awards Quarterly 7(4):98 (1976) without a photo, as award 75-465. This award is in OrchidPro with correct data as 19750935, but lacks photo. OrchidWiz shows this award under the number 19750960, but with the date May 19, 1976, which is incorrect.

Cymbidium Sunshine Falls 'G. G.' HCC/AOS, new scan from Pacific South award slides

AOS Award No. 19750466 Cymbidium Sunshine Falls 'G. G.', HCC/AOS 76 points, G. G. Lemacks. Published in Awards Quarterly 7(4):98 (1976) without a photo, as award 75-466. This award is in OrchidPro with correct data as 19750936, but lacks photo. OrchidWiz shows this award under the number 19750961, but with the date May 19, 1976, which is incorrect.

Laeliocattleya Ballet Folkorico 'Eloquence' JC/AOS, new scan from Pacific South award slides

AOS Award No. 19750467 Laeliocattleya Ballet Folkorico 'Eloquence', JC/AOS, Fred A. Stewart, Inc. Published in Awards Quarterly 7(4):98 (1976) without a photo. OrchidPro has complete information and color photo. Interesting description: "Flowers not of award quality, but represent a primary hybrid made with a hardy, cool-growing Laelia in an attempt to develop a cool-growing Laeliocattleya for outdoor culture in temperate areas. Flowers well spaced on Laelia-type spike, quite large and nicely colored." No flower count was given, but the photo for this award in OrchidPro appears to have three flowers and one bud and matches the award slide. The parentage is C. Song of Norway × L. speciosa, registered by Fred A. Stewart, Inc. in 1975. Another possible award photo is found in OrchidWiz, image #56194, from the collection of Steve McNerney. However, the photo could conceivably come from an award on February 11, 1978, at Atlanta monthly judging, AOS award 19780243 (three flowers on one spike). There is also some possibility that the cultivar 'Elegance', which received an award in Germany in 2015, is in fact the same cultivar 'Eloquence' with a slightly different label.

OrchidPro has complete information and color photo. This hybrid was originally registered as a Laeliocattleya in 1973, then transferred to Sophrocattleya in 2007 (you might wonder why: for a few years, a number of things that had been Laelias for over a century were briefly submerged into Sophronitis), and more recently transferred to plain old Cattleya.

"Unknown" in the lower left corner of the photo is the photo credit for publication in Orchid Digest. We would love to find a better copy of this image. Photo not found in the Pacific South award slides; it might have been borrowed for the preparation of the article in Orchid Digest and never returned.

December 22, 1975:

[The entire month is confused or conflated with other plants, probably duplicate award numbers from the Southland Orchid Society Show in November, 1975. The entire mess has to be sorted out in AQ 8(1):26-28 (13 awards from the Southland Orchid Society Show) and 8(2):52 (four awards properly at Long Beach, as shown below) — plus any other awards in OrchidPro that may duplicate the original Southland Orchid Society Show awards. OrchidPro contains awards 19750908-19750919 from Southland Orchid Society Show November 5, 1975.]

The correct awards from the Southland Orchid Society Show, November 5, 1975, from Awards Quarterly 8(1):26-28 (1977) are the following, with their original award numbers (awards 913, 915, and 918 were never published, apparently; perhaps the award fee was never paid):

  1. 19750904: Phalaenopsis Barbara Freed Saltzman 'Zuma Canyon', AM/AOS 83 points.
  2. 19750905: Phalaenopsis Renee Freed 'Zuma Canyon', AM/AOS 82 points.
  3. 19750906: Phalaenopsis Rhoda Fredricks 'Zuma Canyon', AM/AOS 81 points.
  4. 19750907: Brassolaeliocattleya Leslie Hofman 'Old Gold', AM/AOS 81 points.
  5. 19750908: Brassocattleya Mount Eldorado 'Dawn', HCC/AOS 77 points.
  6. 19750909: Paphiopedilum Freckles 'Green Tag', HCC/AOS 77 points.
  7. 19750910: Paphioledilum Green Mint 'Verde Blanco', HCC/AOS 77 points.
  8. 19750911: Phalaenopsis Bettylee Burke 'Linda Ibarra', HCC/AOS 77 points.
  9. 19750912: Ascocenda Araya 'Zuma Canyon', HCC/AOS 76 points.
  10. 19750914: Paphiopedilum tonsum 'Oceana', HCC/AOS 76 points.
  11. 19750916: Laeliocattleya Waianae Sunset 'Watermelon Gold', HCC/AOS 76 points.
  12. 19750917: Ascocenda Bonanza 'Malibu Cove', HCC/AOS 75 points.
  13. 19750919: Rodriguezia secunda 'Bleeding Hearts', CCM/AOS 83 points.

Paphiopedilum Green Goddess 'Muriel' HCC/AOS, new scan from Pacific South award slides

AOS Award No. 19750904 Paphiopedilum Green Goddess 'Muriel', HCC/AOS 77 points, Lambert Day. Published in Awards Quarterly 8(2):52 (1977) without a photo. This award is not found in OrchidPro, but this award number is used for Phalaenopsis Barbara Freed Saltzman 'Zuma Canyon', exhibited November 5, 1975 at the Southland Orchid Society Show in Anaheim, CA by Zuma Canyon Orchids. OrchidWiz shows the present award under the number 19750962, which is also not found in OrchidPro. Correct description from Awards Quarterly 8(2):52 (1977): "One flower; dorsal, white background with radiating apple-green lines with rose-blushed lines on lateral portions; petals, lime-green with deep burgundy spots; definite burgundy cilia bordering petals; very large pouch, colored burgundy on the front surface, green on the back surface; ventral white with green stripes".

Paphiopedilum Diablo Rojo 'Sonata' HCC/AOS, new scan from Pacific South award slides

AOS Award No. 19750905 Paphiopedilum Diablo Rojo 'Sonata', HCC/AOS 76 points, Clark Day Jr. Orchids. Published in Awards Quarterly 8(2):52 (1977) without a photo. This award is in OrchidPro but is not found in OrchidWiz; however, there is a BM/CSA award possibly for the same flower about two weeks later (but the cultivar name for that award is listed as 'Cerritos') in OrchidWiz, with a color photo. Further, the description for this award in OrchidPro appears to refer to a completely different orchid: "One spike with three buds and 12 flowers of exceptional substance; sepals colored a rosy-lavender with dark lavender lines; lip blood-red, yellow keels". This description turns out to correspond to an award found in OrchidWiz with a completely different identity, but with the same description (and associated with a fine color photo from the Merritt Collection), Phalaenopsis Renee Freed 'Sonata' HCC/AOS 76 points, exhibited December 22, 1975 at Long Beach by Clark Day Jr. Orchids, and award that is not in the AOS awards index 1932-1989. The photo, however, turns out to be OrchidWiz image #118188, Phal. Renee Freed 'Zuma Canyon' AM/AOS, and that award is not in OrchidPro, although it was published in Awards Quarterly 8(1):27 (1977), not from regional judging. Correct description from Awards Quarterly 8(2):52 (1977): "One flower on one spike; white dorsal with basal third deep chartreuse; distinct burgundy mid-line strips; few, scattered, indistinct burgundy stripes laterally; petals with stron burgundy, mid-line stripe with few scattered, indistinct lateral strips; top one-half deep yellow, bottom one-half chartreuse; ventral sepal green with lateral white areas".

AOS Award No. 19750906 Paphiopedilum Charles Sladden 'Rubus', HCC/AOS 76 points, Rowland Collection. Published in Awards Quarterly 8(2):52 (1977) without a photo. The award photo was not found in the Pacific South award slides collection. This award is not found in OrchidPro, but this award number is used for Phalaenopsis Rhoda Fredricks 'Zuma Canyon', exhibited November 5, 1975 at the Southland Orchid Society Show in Anaheim, CA, by Zuma Canyon Orchids (OrchidPro has a color photo apparently consistent with the Rhoda Fredricks award). OrchidWiz shows the present award under the number 19750964. Correct description from Awards Quarterly 8(2):52 (1977): "One open flower and one bud on one spike; cream-green dorsal with mahogany basally, radiating to burgundy spotting; petals off-white background with radially arranged, burgundy spotting; pouch finely specked with burgundy; deep burgundy staminode". Not found in the Pacific South awards slide collection.

Phalaenopsis Freed's Danseuse 'Zuma Ruby' HCC/AOS, new scan from Pacific South award slides

AOS Award No. 19750907 Phalaenopsis Freed's Danseuse 'Zuma Ruby', HCC/AOS 75 points, Zuma Canyon Orchids. Published in Awards Quarterly 8(2):53 (1977) without a photo. This award is in OrchidPro (complete information but no photo) but is not found in OrchidWiz. However, in OrchidWiz, 19750907 is labeled Rhyncholaeliocattleya Leslie Hoffman 'Zuma Ruby' HCC/AOS, exhibited at Long Beach on December 22, 1975 by Zuma Canyon Orchids, but the photo associated with this award is clearly labeled in the photo itself as Blc. Leslie Hoffman 'Old Gold', which the AOS awards index 1932-1989 places in Awards Quarterly 8(1):27 (1977), not at a regional judging event. Also, the description for 19750907 in OrchidPro is the same as the description for Rlc. Leslie Hoffman in OrchidWiz. Evidently the record extracted by OrchidWiz was already corrupted. Correct description from Awards Quarterly 8(2):53 (1977): "One flower; tepals white, striped with dark rose-lavender strips; petals centrally flushed with rose-lavender; labellum rose-lavender with dotted, white throat". The award photo from the Pacific South awards slide collection is poorly exposed, but it is possible there are better versions in other collections.
