We were able to recover photos for 67 of the 86 awards conferred by the Long Beach site. As the awards photos were created, as far as we know, as part of the AOS judging program and for the use of AOS and its judging program, the implied copyright, if any, should remain with AOS, and, as an AOS affiliated society, SCOS presents them here with that understanding. We would very much like to obtain photos from the other awards, possibly from collections of AOS award slides that were sent out to judging centers and affiliate societies over the years.

January 20, 1977:

[No Long Beach awards were found in OrchidPro for January, 1977 !!! The AOS Bulletin for November, 1976 reports that judging was to be held at Wardlow Park at 7:00 pm January 20, 1977. Were there no awards at that session, or have the awards been lost? We were startled to discover six awards for January 20, 1977 judging at the Long Beach site in Awards Quarterly. (The affected awards are numbers 19770316 through 19770321.) In OrchidPro, all of these are attributed to regional judging at Philadelphia, PA on February 2, 1977! This is all the more inexplicable, since the actual Philadelphia awards for that date were published in Awards Quarterly 8(4):148 (1977), plus one late-comer in 10(1):14 (1979), while all of the misattributed Long Beach awards were found in volume 9 (1978).]

AOS Award No. 19771071 Gomesa maculosa 'La Selva', AM/AOS 80 points, G. G. Lemacks. Published in Awards Quarterly 10(1):22 (1979) with black and white photo. OrchidPro has complete information and color photo, badly faded. What is this plant? It seems to be very recent (2020) transfer from Oncidium maculosum Lindley (1837), which, as recently as 2004, was at least occasionally cited as Oncidium bifolium, which in turn was transferred in 2009 as Gomesa bifolia. The original award was published as Oncidium spilopterum, another synonym of the current Gomesa maculosa. In any case, the photo in OrchidPro is badly faded, and all the Gomesa species involved in the synonymy are brilliant, deep "butter yellow".

AOS Award No. 19771078 Cattleya deckeri 'Brecht's', CCM/AOS 85 points, Paul Brecht. Published in Awards Quarterly 10(1):22 (1979) with black and white photo. OrchidPro has complete information and color photo. After multiple taxonomic adventures, during which it was most often known as a variety or form of Cattleya skinneri, this form has recently been, and, we think, correctly known as Guarianthe deckeri. However, there has been a recent attempt (2015), apparently accepted by Kew, to rename the natural hybrid Guarianthe × guatemalensis to × laelioides on the basis of a very vague and tentative description of a wilted flower, and then to submerge deckeri, which other authors have recognized as distinct, as a form of that natural hybrid. A further complication is that the name of the artificial hybrid Guarianthe Guatemalensis (skinneri × aurantiaca) has not been changed, and in most cases, there is no way to be sure whether any particular plant that might be referred to this parentage was collected in the wild or was the result of a cross occurring in cultivation, and hence, what its correct name should be.

Probably the best photo is the one Fred Stewart used for advertising, as in Orchid Digest 44(6), November-December 1980, p. 229, "Introducing a New Masterpiece From Stewart's, The Great New Winter Flowering Pink Brasso Blc. Pamela Hetherington 'Coronation' am/aos, (Patent Pending)".
