We were able to recover photos for 65 of the 83 awards conferred by the Long Beach site. The quality of the photos for 1978 is much improved over previous years, possibly due to better lighting and perhaps also improvements in camera technology. However, some of the photos from the AOS database have a strong bluish tinge, which we were able to eliminate from some of them by adjusting the color balance. Starting in November, 1978, every award was accompanied by a photo — a policy change? As the awards photos were created, as far as we know, as part of the AOS judging program and for the use of AOS and its judging program, the implied copyright, if any, should remain with AOS, and, as an AOS affiliated society, SCOS presents them here with that understanding. We would very much like to obtain photos from the other awards, possibly from collections of AOS award slides that were sent out to judging centers and affiliate societies over the years.
Awards that require corrections in OrchidPro, or that are not found at all in OrchidPro, are indicated by a warning sign:
Awards where editing or replacement of the photos in OrchidPro should be considered are indicated by a camera icon:

AOS Award No. 19780059 Paphiopedilum Iolanthe 'AM/RHS', HCC/AOS 76 points, Rowland Collection. Published in Awards Quarterly 10(2):55 (1979) without a photo. OrchidPro has complete information but lacks photo. There is a problem with the identity of this plant; there appears to be no RHS award for a Paph. Iolanthe, and in fact, there is an award by CSA just five days later that is likely the same plant, shown in OrchidWiz as "Paph. Iolanthe (Draco)", and referred there to Paph. Draco, an unnamed cultivar of which did in fact receive AM/RHS in 1910. The implication is that Draco was at some point recognized as a synonym for Iolanthe. The painting of the awarded "Draco" by Nellie Roberts is indeed quite similar to the CSA photo of Iolanthe from 1978. There may be some discussion of the identification in Orchid Advocate (4(2):65), where the CSA award was published (not yet examined). Not found in the Pacific South awards slide collection.

[While the judging date in OrchidPro shows the correct date, April 24, 1978, the "event date" for this group in OrchidPro is listed as April 23, 1978, in error.]
AOS Award No. 19780669 Paphiopedilum Demura 'Red Dove', HCC/AOS 78 points, Clark Day Jr. Orchids. Published in Awards Quarterly 10(4):117 (1979) without a photo. OrchidPro has complete information but lacks photo. Not found in the Pacific South awards slide collection.
AOS Award No. 19780670 Cymbidium Claudona 'Rajah 4N', HCC/AOS 76 points, Featherhill Exotic Plants. Published in Awards Quarterly 10(4):117 (1979) without a photo. OrchidPro has complete information but lacks photo. Under the cultivar name 'Rajah', photos of this plant (?), ploidy apparently not specified, have been published by the CSA several times. As there seem to have been no CSA awards for 'Rajah', however, it is possible that their photo is the AOS award photo. The photos in Orchid Advocate 3:124, 3:149 (both 1977), and 6:76 (1980) have not yet been examined (these photos are noted in OrchidWiz, but are not among the CSA award photos that have been contributed to OrchidWiz).

OrchidPro has complete information and color photo. Cultivar name has also been published as 'Indian Durban'. However, Durban is a city in South Africa, while a Durbar is sort of traditional formal gathering of notables in India, so we surmise that 'Indian Durbar' is correct. OrchidPro attributes this award to the Ponce, Puerto Rico judging site, in error, but the other Long Beach awards published on the same page were entered into the awards database correctly.
AOS Award No. 19780674 Paphiopedilum Fern Dell 'Mountain Spring', AM/AOS 81 points, Fred A. Stewart, Inc. Published in Awards Quarterly 11(1):10 (1980) with black and white photo. OrchidPro has complete information and color photo.

The award slide shows that the cultivar name was originally 'Shride'.

OrchidPro has complete information and color photo. The color slide for this award matches the award description, "bright yellow sepals and petals with slight green blush, muted green stripes, tips of petals punctuated with brick spots; lip cream, edged in yellow, cadmium red markings mostly at periphery; brick red tipped column". When this same cultivar was awarded at Pacific South Regional Monthly Judging in 1971 (AM/AOS, with a lower score, 83 points), the description indicated "chartreuse tepals, with small red dotted line at petal tips; lip yellow with red spots on margin; sepals deep apple-green on back". Thus, the 1978 award slide is the appropriate one that should be associated with this award in OrchidPro; the other image matches the one for award number 19710224 as published in Awards Quarterly 2(3):58 (July, 1971). After checking the entries in OrchidPro, it is now clear what has happened: The images have been reversed; the one now attached to 19710224 belongs with 19781138, and the one now attached to 19781138 belongs with 19710224.
AOS Award No. 19781139 Paphiopedilum Makuli 'Beacon Light', AM/AOS 80 points, John E. Wilson. Published in Awards Quarterly 11(3):93 (1980) with black and white photo. OrchidPro has complete information and color photo.

AOS Award No. 19781143 Cymbidium tracyanum 'FCC/RHS', HCC/AOS 77 points, Featherhill Exotic Plants. Published in Awards Quarterly 11(3):93-94 (1980) with black and white photo. OrchidPro has complete information and color photo. An unnamed cultivar of this species received FCC/RHS in 1890, when shown by Mr. Tracy himself, so the plant awarded in 1978 is apparently believed to be a division of the one awarded in 1890.
AOS Award No. 19781144 Paphiopedilum Soulageanum 'Swiss Miss', HCC/AOS 75 points, John E. Wilson. Published in Awards Quarterly 11(3):94 (1980) with black and white photo. OrchidPro has complete information and color photo. Here we have a little puzzle. Who was this hybrid named after? Many gardeners know and love Magnolia × soulangeana, named after the botanist Etienne Soulange-Bodin (1774-1846). Was the Paph hybrid named after the same person? No! The hybrid now known as Paph. Soulageanum is attributed to Joseph Ginot, whose residence is given as "Château de Soulange, Loire, France" (OrchidWiz, copied from the RHS Orchid Registry). That would seem to be proof that the name should properly be spelled Soulangeanum. But can we find the château? In the Département da la Marne, France, there was a noble family called d'André, who resided in the "Château de Soulanges" at least until the late 19th Century. It is certainly not out of the question that a gardener there, perhaps Monsieur Ginot, was reponsible for an orchid collection. There is, in fact, a Cattleya hybrid called Soulageana, registered in 1905 by the same Joseph Ginot. There may also be a number of other (generic) "châteaux" in the area. However, in the Journal de la société nationale d'horticulture de France (sér. 4, tome 6, issue of December, 1905, p. 100), we found a different answer, in a list of the current members of the Société: Joseph Ginot, member since 1904, a property owner and amateur orchid grower, lived at rue Marengo 19, in Saint-Etienne, and also had property at Soulages, near Izieux, in the Département de la Loire. We know he is the right Joseph Ginot, because (p. 797, in a report from the meeting of November 23, 1905) there is a long description of Ginot's "new hybrid", Lælio-Cattleya Soulageana, from Lælia Perrini × Cattleya Eldorado, for which Ginot was awarded a "certificate of merit". Today Soulages (occasionally written without the final — and silent — s) is a hamlet within the commune of La Valla-en-Gier, tucked into a very scenic corner of the Département de la Loire. Meanwhile, Izieux was combined with three other villages in 1964, to form the modern commune of Saint-Chamond, directly to the north of La Valla-en-Gier. Saint-Etienne is the next commune west of these. Now we have our answer: The registration information that we found in OrchidWiz, presumably copied from the RHS Orchid Registry at some point, contains an error: Monsieur Ginot was from the "Château de Soulages", not the "Château de Soulanges". The name is correct, but the registration information may need to be corrected.
AOS Award No. 19781145 Cymbidium Via Costa 'Red December', HCC/AOS 75 points, Gallup & Stribling Orchids. Published in Awards Quarterly 11(3):93 (1980) with black and white photo. OrchidPro has complete information and color photo. The scan in OrchidPro is obviously much darker than the new scan from the award slide, but the award description in this case is not particularly helpful in deciding which image should be preferred: "raspberry pink with darker venation; yellow lip with maroon spotting and edging". The new scan, at least, does show the yellow on the lip, and the color of the stem looks more natural.
