We were able to recover photos for 94 of the 95 awards conferred by the Long Beach site. As the awards photos were created, as far as we know, as part of the AOS judging program and for the use of AOS and its judging program, the implied copyright, if any, should remain with AOS, and, as an AOS affiliated society, SCOS presents them here with that understanding. We would very much like to obtain a photo for the remaining award, possibly from collections of AOS award slides that were sent out to judging centers and affiliate societies over the years.

Overall, the digitized versions of the award photos, originally color slides, that are now shown in OrchidPro have two major defects: First, they are almost all too blue (this is especially obvious in the color of the foliage and the blue tint of any "green" flowers), and second, they are too pale, by comparison with the descriptions. Also, a few of the photos are very grainy and uneven, or have additional distortions of color. Further, in those cases where the same award slides have been contributed to OrchidWiz by individual judges or growers, the images are frequently mirror images, and are of excellent quality. It may be that when AOS digitized the slides, they were often scanned from the wrong side. Most of these faults could probably be corrected by new scans of the slides using modern equipment and software. One fault that cannot be corrected is the uneven illumination on many of the photos, resulting from poor placement of additional lamps on either side of the flowers in such a way that shadows were created.

The award description specifies "sepals and petals ochre with green cast on central portion and rose veining on periphery; lip deep gold with light rose edging, throat with two deep red side lobes". The OrchidPro version is clearly much too green, the award slide is too yellow. This might be an instance where the award slide is in fact a duplicate of the original, and the duplication process exaggerated the yellow tones. Do other collections have a different version of the slide?

We have no idea where the photo in OrchidPro came from.
