We were able to recover photos for 102 of the 103 awards conferred by the Long Beach site. As the awards photos were created, as far as we know, as part of the AOS judging program and for the use of AOS and its judging program, the implied copyright, if any, should remain with AOS, and, as an AOS affiliated society, SCOS presents them here with that understanding. We would very much like to obtain photos from the other award, possibly from collections of AOS award slides that were sent out to judging centers and affiliate societies over the years.
Awards that require corrections in OrchidPro, or that are not found at all in OrchidPro, are indicated by a warning sign:
Awards where editing or replacement of the photos in OrchidPro should be considered are indicated by a camera icon:
AOS Award No. 19800666 Paphiopedilum Parry Gripp 'Santa Barbara', AM/AOS 86 points, Santa Barbara Orchid Estate. Published in Awards Quarterly 12(2):96 (1981) with black and white photo. OrchidPro has complete information and color photo.

OrchidPro has complete information and color photo. Signor Franchini submitted cut paph flowers for judging, two to San Francisco in 1979, and five to Long Beach in 1980. He lived in the Pegli district in the municipality of Genoa, Italy.
AOS Award No. 19800669 Rhynvandopsis Memoria Mary Nattrass 'Zuma Canyon', AM/AOS 82 points, Zuma Canyon Orchids. Published in Awards Quarterly 12(2):96 (1981) with black and white photo. OrchidPro has complete information and color photo. This hybrid was registered and awarded as an Opsistylis.

AOS Award No. 19800672 Cattleya Prism Palette 'Rainbow', AM/AOS 81 points, P. G. Barnett. Published in Awards Quarterly 12(2):96-97 (1981) with black and white photo. OrchidPro has complete information and color photo. The award slide clearly gives the cultivar name as 'Rainbows', which we think is more likely to be correct. This hybrid was formerly a Laeliocattleya. The award photo has been reprinted in the AOS Bulletin and its successor, Orchids, several times, but in every case, the result is not as good as the original image shown here, in spite of its obvious faded and slightly bluish tint. In every case where it has been reprinted, the photographer is noted as Richard Clark, although the OrchidPro database says "Unknown Photographer".
AOS Award No. 19800673 Paphiopedilum Great Pacific 'Summer Glory', AM/AOS 80 points, Franchini Agostino Floricoltura. Published in Awards Quarterly 12(2):97 (1981) with black and white photo. OrchidPro has complete information and color photo.

AOS Award No. 19800685 Rhyncholaeliocattleya Memoria Dorothy Bertsch, AD/AOS, Walter Bertsch. Published in Awards Quarterly 12(2):98 (1981) without a photo. OrchidPro has complete information and color photo. The hybrid was formerly a Brassolaeliocattleya. This award was given for a group of six plants of outstanding quality, three of which were previously awarded, although no cultivar names are given in the description. The three previous awards are from the New York Regional Supplemental Monthly Judging, and we think we can identify these in the present award photo, positions as in the OrchidWiz photo below: 'Buttercup' (HCC/AOS, November 19, 1976, upper right), 'Desert Sand' (AM/AOS, February 16, 1977, lower right), and 'Copper Glow' (AM/AOS, February 16, 1977, center left. 'Topaz', see above, award 19800670, is bottom center. Of the remaining two in this picture, we think the yellow one in the center is likely 'Strawberry Gold' (HCC/AOS, December 14, 1981 at Los Angeles monthly judging), and the one in the upper right is probably 'Amber Gem' (AM/AOS, March 9, 1981 at Los Angeles monthly judging). A better version of this photo (below, better color balance, but the foliage is still a bit too blue), a mirror image, is found in OrchidWiz, image #117681, from the Merritt Collection.
AOS Award No. 19800686 Paphiopedilum insigne 'Variegatum', JC/AOS (OrchidPro shows this as JC/JOGA, but nevertheless says the plant was judged at the Long Beach site! — OrchidWiz shows this as JC/AOS, as does the award slide), Featherhill Exotic Plants. Published in Awards Quarterly 12(2):98 (1981) without a photo. OrchidPro has complete information but lacks photo. Description says this is a typical specimen of Paph. insigne, but notes the "outstanding charm and distinction" of the variegated foliage. While there is no photo in OrchidPro, a photo that is apparently the same plant (matching the grower, cultivar name, and award JC/AOS) is found in OrchidWiz, image #109726, photo credited to Don Lindabury, and contributed to OrchidWiz by Tom Larkin. This does not seem to be the award photo, but we include it here. There is also a cultivar 'A-doribil' that may well be a division of the same plant, more recently awarded (AOS award 20001850, growers Doris Dukes and Bill Thoms, Dover, Florida, JC/AOS, December 13, 2000, Florida North Central monthly judging).
AOS Award No. 19800687 Cymbidium Yankee Whaler 'Moby Dick', AM/AOS 88 points, Fred A. Stewart. Published in Awards Quarterly 12(2):110 (1981) with black and white photo. OrchidPro has complete information and color photo.
AOS Award No. 19800688 Paphiopedilum Cheryl Ann Boyd 'Cerritos', AM/AOS 84 points, Clark Day Jr. Orchids. Published in Awards Quarterly 12(2):110-111 (1981) with black and white photo. OrchidPro has complete information and color photo.
AOS Award No. 19800689 Cattlianthe Hazel Boyd 'Scarlet Jewel', AM/AOS 81 points, Murray Spencer. Published in Awards Quarterly 12(2):111 (1981) with black and white photo. OrchidPro has complete information buy lacks photo. However, a color photo clearly taken at the same judging session but from a slightly different angle was featured as part of an anonymous feature entitled "How to Judge a Hazel Boyd?" in Awards Quarterly 16(1):20-21 (1985), see below. Another version (a mirror image) of the second photo (or possibly a separate shot from almost exactly the same position) is found in OrchidWiz, image #192742, attributed to photographer Plato Peter Matthews, also shown below. Now that the award slide has been scanned, it is clear that the black-and-white photo in Awards Quarterly is a different shot of the same flower. The hybrid was originally a Sophrolaeliocattleya, then briefly a Guarisophleya (before the suppression of the genus Sophronitis).
AOS Award No. 19800690 Lycaste virginalis 'Coban Ruby', HCC/AOS 78 points, Santa Barbara Orchid Estate. Published in Awards Quarterly 12(2):111 (1981) without a photo. OrchidPro has complete information but lacks photo. At the time of the award, the plant was called Lycaste skinneri, a name which is now considered a synonym of Lycaste virginalis. The award photo has appeared twice in the AOS Bulletin (October, 1981 and April, 1984), both times printed with exaggerated contrast that makes the center of the flower almost entirely black. Those two photos, however, match a superior version found in OrchidWiz, image #118110, attributed to the Merritt Collection.

OrchidPro has complete information and color photo. The photo in OrchidPro, while excellent in almost every respect, it decidedly bluish. Below, we show the result of adjusting the color balance just enough to remove this tint, followed by one of the reprints of the award photo, this one from Orchids 79(6):335 (June, 2010), a much better image derived from the original color slide.
AOS Award No. 19800906 Paphiopedilum concolor 'Yamato Gold', AM/AOS 82 points, Fumimasa Sugiyama. Published in Awards Quarterly 12(3):194 (1981) with black and white photo. OrchidPro has complete information and color photo.

AOS Award No. 19800909 Paphiopedilum Harrisianum 'FCC/RHS', HCC/AOS 78 points, Clark Day Jr. Orchids. Published in Awards Quarterly 12(3):194 (1981) with black and white photo. OrchidPro has complete information and color photo. The origin of this plant is not clear. There are two FCC/RHS awards for Paph. Harrisianum, one without a cultivar name in 1869, the other with the cultivar name 'Superbum' in 1887. Could the 1980 award plant actually be a division of one of these? Such a survival seems unlikely but not entirely impossible. Not long after this award was conferred at Long Beach, the award photo appeared in the AOS Bulletin (50(8):925, August, 1981) in an article by Ned Nash, "The Maudiae-type Paphiopedilums — Part 2 — Reds and Other Colors". He wrote, "The timeless popularity of this group of paphs can be traced back literally to the beginning of orchid hybridizing. The first artificially produced Paphiopedilum hybrid to flower was Paph. Harrisianum (barbatum × villosum). The same clone of Paph. Harrisianum originally exhibited and awarded a First Class Certificate from the Royal Horticultural Society in 1869 is still in widespread cultivation today." Mr. Nash was working at Armacost & Royston in Carpenteria, CA at the time this article was published, so we can assume he was well informed about Southern California orchid growers such as Clark Day, Jr. and their plants.
AOS Award No. 19800910 Oncidium lanceanum 'Virgil Schade', HCC/AOS 77 points, Walter F. Bertsch. Published in Awards Quarterly 12(3):194 (1981) with black and white photo. OrchidPro has complete information and color photo. This species is now correctly Trichocentrum lanceanum.
AOS Award No. 19800911 Cattleya loddigesii var. harrisoniae 'Impassionata', HCC/AOS 77 points, Fred A. Stewart, Inc. Published in Awards Quarterly 12(3):193 (1981) with black and white photo. OrchidPro has complete information and color photo. The former variety harrisoniae is now considered a separate species, Cattleya harrisoniae.
AOS Award No. 19800912 Cattleya sincorana 'Cathy Congleton', HCC/AOS 75 points, Helen Congleton. Published in Awards Quarterly 12(3):194 (1981) with black and white photo. OrchidPro has complete information and color photo. This species was formerly considered a Laelia, but in recent years has been known as a Sophronitis and, although few growers seem to have followed this split, as a Hadrolaelia.
AOS Award No. 19800913 Cattleya purpurata (Carnea) 'Carol Ann', CCM/AOS 82 points, Featherhill Exotic Plants. Published in Awards Quarterly 12(3):194 (1981) with black and white photo. OrchidPro has complete information and color photo. This species was known for a very long time as Laelia purpurata. The award slide specifies that this is an F3 plant; in other words, the result of three generations of inbreeding from a selected clone.
AOS Award No. 19800914 Rhyncholaeliocattleya Eve Marie Barnett 'Golden Clarion', HCC/AOS 79 points, P. G. Barnett. Published in Awards Quarterly 13(1):69 (1982) with black and white photo. AOS Award No. 19800916 Rhyncholaeliocattleya Eve Marie Barnett 'Coral Empress', HCC/AOS 77 points, P. G. Barnett. This award is misplaced in OrchidPro, with award date February 27, 1981, at the Santa Cruz Orchid Society Show in Capitola, CA. However, the other information is correct for the award at Long Beach in 1980, as published in Awards Quarterly 13(1):69 (1982) with black and white photo. How this award in OrchidPro became attached to the show at Capitola is unknown. This hybrid was formerly a Brassolaeliocattleya.

OrchidPro has complete information and color photo. This hybrid was formerly an Odontoglossum. Another version of the award photo, differently cropped and (properly!) oriented, a mirror image, is found in OrchidWiz, image #128494, attributed to the Merritt Collection.
AOS Award No. 19801218 Cattleya Candy Tuft 'Fairy Floss', HCC/AOS 76 points, Fred A. Stewart, Inc. Published in Awards Quarterly 12(4):222 (1981) with black and white photo. OrchidPro has complete information and color photo. This hybrid is now correctly a Cattlianthe. From the photos, it is not obvious whether this cultivar should be regarded as a coerulea form or just a very pale lavender. The description favors the latter, in spite of the oddly bluish tones in both versions of the image: "petals and sepals off-white, blushed lavender-pink on periphery; lip off-white with bright yellow throat, marginated with lavender-pink". Accordingly, we adjusted the scan of the award slide slightly toward red and away from blue.
AOS Award No. 19801219 Oncidium Goldfinger 'Fort Knox', HCC/AOS 76 points, Featherhill Exotic Plants. Published in Awards Quarterly 12(4):222 (1981) with black and white photo. OrchidPro has complete information and color photo. This hybrid was formerly an Odontocidium.
AOS Award No. 19801220 Cymbidium kuanin 'Soshim', HCC/AOS 76 points, Lloyd S. Yang. Published in Awards Quarterly 12(4):222 (1981) with black and white photo. OrchidPro has complete information and color photo. The award slide shows the cultivar as 'Soshini'. The description is "sepals and petals ice green, somewhat darker at midribs of lateral sepals and centers of petals; lip white with faint yellow tint". The photo in OrchidPro seems faded and slightly bluish relative to the description, while the scan of the award slide seems too yellow. We realized that the name Kuanin must originally have been Chinese, and that there have been many different "romanizations" of Chinese names into English. We consulted our friends with more experience in Oriental Cymbidiums. Jack Zhu provided the modern name, Guanyin Suxin (觀音素心, or in the newer, simplified Chinese character system, 观音素心), a horticultural form of Cymbidium ensifolium. Therefore, the label Cymbidium ensifolium 'Guanyin Suxin' seems to be the best available designation for this award. Guanyin is the traditional Buddhist bodhisattva or goddess of compassion, widely venerated and honored (in Japan, known as Kannon), suxin recalls an attribute of her character, pure-minded, one literal translation is "plain heart". Thus, there are a number of awards and illustrations identified with various forms, spellings, and misspellings of this name. We found Yuan Yin Sun Xin, Susin, Kuan-in suh-shin (with or without the hyphens), Kuan Yin alba, var. kuan in shu shin 'Concolor', and Goddess of Mercy Plain Heart. The older Cymbidium gyokuchin is now considered a synonym, or at best, a variety, of Cym. ensifolium, so there are additional illustrations under that name as well, including Kuan Sin Susin. Until very recently, and perhaps still, AOS judging of the traditional Chinese Cymbidium forms has concentrated on the flowers (as in the present award slide), while orchid judging in Asia looks at the entire plant, so appreciated in Chinese brush paintings as far back as this art form can be traced. There has been some discussion about the possible hybrid origins of some examples of ensifolium, including one award from 2017 that was eventually "nullified" when the SITF team was unable to confirm its identity, suspecting that it was a hybrid, "due to the enfolded side lobes of the lip". Prized forms of this species have been in cultivation probably for centuries, their ultimate origins by now unknown, very similar to the situation for cultivated forms of Vanda (Neofinetia) falcata.
AOS Award No. 19801221 Phalaenopsis Carmen Coll 'Bonnie Vasquez', HCC/AOS 75 points, Zuma Canyon Orchids. Published in Awards Quarterly 12(4):222 (1981) with black and white photo. OrchidPro has complete information and color photo.
AOS Award No. 19801222 Phalaenopsis Cis Ryerson 'Zuma Delight', HCC/AOS 75 points, Zuma Canyon Orchids. Published in Awards Quarterly 12(4):222 (1981) with black and white photo. OrchidPro has complete information and color photo.
AOS Award No. 19801223 Rhyncholaeliocattleya Papa Sam 'Signal Hill', HCC/AOS 75 points, Dos Pueblos Orchid Co. This award is incorrectly attributed to Los Angeles monthly judging rather than Long Beach in the OrchidPro database. The correct information was published in Awards Quarterly 13(3):194-195 (1982) with black and white photo. OrchidPro has complete information (but with the incorrect venue) and color photo. Possibly the error arose during data entry into the awards database, because the next item in that issue of Awards Quarterly was from Los Angeles monthly judging. The hybrid name is a play on "papasan", which the Oxford English dictionary tells us was originally coined in Japan in the very early 20th Century (combining "papa", imported from English, with "san" from Japanese), and later as US military slang for any East Asian old man, as in Korea and Vietnam; closer to home, remember the "papasan chair", a traditional furniture form in the Philippines and possibly Japan that seems to have acquired this name when imported to America in the 1970's. In this case, the Papa-san or Papa Sam in question is the famous Samuel Mosher, who got his start in the oil business by setting up a simple gasoline extraction plant on Signal Hill, and later founded Dos Pueblos Orchid Co. on his rancho at Goleta. In other words, the Signal Hill oil boom played a big part in the development of the orchid hobby and industry in Long Beach and Santa Barbara. What a nice bit of nostalgia for our Long Beach judges in 1980! This hybrid was formerly a Brassolaeliocattleya.
AOS Award No. 19801230 Cattleya pumila 'Vistacrest', HCC/AOS 76 points, James and Sally Tatum. Published in Awards Quarterly 12(4):229 (1981) with black and white photo. OrchidPro has complete information and color photo. This species was formerly known by almost everyone as Laelia pumila, but occasionally as a Sophronitis or a Hadrolaelia. The description gives the color as "rose-pink-lavender", and the lip, "dark royal purple".
AOS Award No. 19801231 Cymbidium Golden Elf 'Sundust', HCC/AOS 75 points, Rowland Collection. Published in Awards Quarterly 12(4):229 (1981) with black and white photo. OrchidPro has complete information and color photo. Not found in the Pacific South awards slide collection.
AOS Award No. 19801232 Paphiopedilum Leyburnense 'Magnificum Dragonstone', JC/AOS, Paul G. Bechtel. Published in Awards Quarterly 12(4):229 (1981) without a photo. OrchidPro has complete information but lacks photo. Not found in the Pacific South awards slide collection. The name is problematic. The hybrid is now correctly known as Paph. Mrs. Haywood. The same cross was also introduced about the same time by another grower, W. Farrar, as Paph. Leyburnense, but we have not discovered how or when the synonymy was resolved. This hybrid was originated and registered in 1904 (some sources say 1905) by a "Mrs. Haywood", who is also credited with two other Paphs and a Dendrobium. The same cultivar 'Magnificum Dragonstone', and very likely the same flower, received AD/CSA as a "novelty paph" five weeks after the present AOS award. Whether 'Magnificum Dragonstone' is actually different from the old cultivar 'Magnificum', which seems still to be in circulation, is unknown. Around 1905, Mrs. Thomas Burt Haywood (née Margaret Louisa Scott, 1841-1914) was the owner of Woodhatch Lodge, Reigate, Surrey, whose gardener was a Mr. C. J. Salter. During the taxonomic crisis of 2007, when the Registrar of Orchid Hybrids, Julian Shaw, was suddenly required to come up with scores of new nothogenera and their abbreviations ("the nightmare for the registration staff continues..."), one of them was Haywoodara [Hwy.] (Brassavola × Cattleya × Caularthron × Guarianthe × Laelia × Rhyncholaelia × Sophronitis). However, within a year, due to the suppression of Sophronitis, any existing or potential Haywoodara became Andersonara (Brassavola × Cattleya × Caularthron × Guarianthe × Laelia × Rhyncholaelia), named for Edgar S. Anderson, 1897-1969, an American botanist well known for his work in genetics, introgressive hybridization, and speciation.
AOS Award No. 19801233 Rhyncholaeliocattleya Princess Teresa 'Lavender and Lace', AM/AOS 80 points, P. G. Barnett. Published in Awards Quarterly 12(4):238 (1981) with black and white photo. OrchidPro has complete information and color photo. A much better version of this photo (a mirror image) is found in OrchidWiz, image #117489, attributed to the Merritt collection. This hybrid was formerly a Brassocattleya. Not found in the Pacific South awards slide collection.
AOS Award No. 19801234 Laeliocattleya Oriental Splendor 'Golden Dragon', HCC/AOS 79 points, P. G. Barnett. Published in Awards Quarterly 12(4):238 (1981) with black and white photo. OrchidPro has complete information and color photo. A much better version of this photo (a mirror image) is found in OrchidWiz, image #117875, attributed to the Merritt collection. This hybrid is now correctly a Cattleya. The same cultivar was exhibited by the Barnett's at our meeting in Long Beach on October 26, 1981, where it achieved AM/AOS — and OrchidWiz has that award photo as well, again from the Merritt Collection, image #117874.
AOS Award No. 19801235 Gomesa Gardneri 'Golden Empire', HCC/AOS 78 points, Dana Friend. Published in Awards Quarterly 12(4):238-239 (1981) with black and white photo. OrchidPro has complete information and color photo. This hybrid (parentage now correctly listed as Gomesa dasytyle × forbesii) was formerly considered an Oncidium, and is not to be confused with the species now known as Gomesa gardneri, originally described as Oncidium gardneri in 1843. Many other names are involved in the synonymy of Gomesa gardneri..
AOS Award No. 19801236 Rhyncholaeliocattleya Hawaiian Galaxy 'Aloha', HCC/AOS 77 points, Dr. A. G. Tharp. Published in Awards Quarterly 13(3):195 (1982) with black and white photo. OrchidPro has complete information and color photo. This hybrid was formerly a Brassolaeliocattleya.
AOS Award No. 19801237 Cymbidium Koripan 'Sweet Lime', HCC/AOS 77 points, Fred A. Stewart, Inc. Published in Awards Quarterly 13(4):229 (1982) with black and white photo. OrchidPro has complete information and color photo. The description indicates "twenty-two yellow-green flowers, lighter on edges of sepals, on two inflorescences; lip yellow-green with mahogany spots", so the scan from the award slide is most likely closer to the correct color.
AOS Award No. 19801240 Oncidium Tiger Hambühren 'Graceful Gold', HCC/AOS 75 points, Dana Friend. Published in Awards Quarterly 12(4):239 (1981) with black and white photo, but not found in OrchidPro. This hybrid was formerly an Odontocidium. The award photo was not found in the Pacific South awards slide collection. It might have been loaned out for use in publication or a slide show and never returned.
AOS Award No. 19801241 Paphiopedilum Angela 'Bertsch's', HCC/AOS 75 points, Walter F. Bertsch. Published in Awards Quarterly 12(4):239 (1981) with black and white photo. OrchidPro has complete information and color photo.
AOS Award No. 19801304 Catasetum pileatum 'Green Giant', AM/AOS 80 points, Edwin and Donna Wise. Published in Awards Quarterly 12(4):247 (1981) with black and white photo. OrchidPro has complete information and color photo. Not found in the Pacific South awards slide collection.
AOS Award No. 19801305 Catyclia Dowsett Gem 'Tall Chief', HCC/AOS 78 points, Norito Hasegawa. Published in Awards Quarterly 12(4):247 (1981) with black and white photo. OrchidPro has complete information and color photo. This hybrid was formerly an Epicattleya. The deep purple background in the photo attached to this award in OrchidPro alerts us that the color is likely not true in this award photo, or at least, too dark. The description says the sepals and petals are rose-violet with deeper violet venation, "lip cream at base, shading to medium rose-violet at outer edge, central lobe with red-violet venation". We adjusted the contrast and brightness slightly here.
