Orchid Digest Corporation and Affiliated Societies Judging

Following this final year of ODC judging, publication of the awards was not completed until July, 1969, and only a single award photo was found. It is not certain that all the ODC awards were finally published. We know exactly which organizations were participating in ODC judging around that time, because a list of them was published in Orchid Digest 30(10):320 (December, 1966), and another list (adding Alamo Orchid Society) in 31(6):180 (June, 1967): Greater North Texas Orchid Society (GNTOS), Dallas, TX Missouri Orchid Society (MOS), St. Louis, MO Northwest Orchid Society (NWOS), Seattle, WA Orchid Society of California (OSC), Oakland, CA Orchid Society of Southern California (OSSC), Exposition Park, Los Angeles, CA Alamo Orchid Society (SAOS, the acronym stands for San Antonio Orchid Society), San Antonio, TX San Francisco Orchid Society (SFOS), San Francisco, CA South Coast Orchid Society (SCOS), Long Beach, CA If the newsletters of these organizations can be recovered, we may be able to add to the list of ODC awards.

Publication of the 1967 awards was somewhat disorderly. Many awards were published twice. The focus of ODC had changed as well, with more space being given to results of field work, cultural topics, and progress reports from notable orchid breeders, and far less on awards and shows.

The difficulties attending the publication of the 1967 awards must have been anticipated, for it was already well known by January, 1967 that ODC intended to merge its judging program with the AOS judging program. What may not have been obvious at that time, however, was just how much the ODC judging program had grown, and how long it would take to publish the last year of awards. AOS was facing similar problems, with the eventual result that AOS awards were soon spun off as a separate periodical, the Awards Quarterly, which ran from 1969 through 2007, after which the awards were published only on the AOS web site.

The announcement of January, 1967 took the form of a "President's Letter: Invitation of the AOS to the ODC" (Orchid Digest 31(1):31), as follows:

As many of our readers know, representatives of the Orchid Digest Corporation and the American Orchid Society have been discussing possible avenues of cooperation, and the trustees of the AOS have invited the ODC to affiliate with the AOS as the Western Regional Association in the AOS. The directors of the ODC have authorized a committee to explore the details of possible affiliation and cooperation further, and this committee has been in contact with the officers of the AOS. The primary concern of the conversations has been to establish one unified national orchid judging system, and to end the duplication that has existed in some areas — a duplication of awards by the two organizations which, to a very large degree, have been made by the same persons acting as judges for both organizations. The present statement is being published in the hope that misunderstandings may be avoided, and the following paragraphs present information on (1) what the affiliation would involve and (2) what it would not involve, based on the invitation of the AOS and the conversations preceding and following it.

(1) What affiliation would involve:

A. The two judging systems would be merged, with all ODC judges of whatever status who are not already AOS judges becoming AOS judges.

B. Awards formerly given by the ODC would be recognized as part of the on-going system.

C. The Orchid Digest would continue to be published and would have the privilege of publishing all or any part of the current awards.

D. The ODC would sponsor the Western Orchid Congresses as before.

E. The ODC would continue such activities as research, recognition of outstanding service to the orchid world by awarding its medal, and so on as it may choose.

(2) What affiliation does not involve:

A. There is no intention that the ODC go out of business.

B. There is no intention that the Orchid Digest magazine go out of business.

C. There is no intention to abandon ODC research or other activities with the exception of a separate judging program.

In the opinion of the writer, acceptance of the AOS invitation would eliminate duplication in judging and establish the basis for cooperation and mutual trust between the ODC and AOS to the benefit of orchid growers everywhere, without restricting the ODC in any special effort it wishes to make to further the knowledge and enjoyment of orchids for everyone.

It is possible that some award photos were published later, as illustrations rather than as a record of awards. However, even if such photos include captions that mention the ODC award status, it will be difficult to verify that they are in fact "official" ODC award photos, unless additional evidence can be found.

Additional ODC award photos will likely surface in the "Orchid Archive" of the Huntington Botanical Center, where thousands of slides await a detailed inventory.
