South Coast Orchid Society

Awards conferred by the American Orchid Society through the end of 1968 were published as a normal, if sometimes irregular feature in the AOS Bulletin (punctuated by such "disruptions" as the AOS Secretary's "trip to the West Coast" in 1950, for example), but also in a separate Register of Awards (one volume plus supplements I through VI, paged continuously). During the same period, Orchid Digest Corporation, through its affiliated societies, conducted its own judging program in our area, but the records of the ODC awards are more difficult to compile and will be presented separately. The AOS awards listed here serve to fill out the story of orchids as a hobby and business in Southern California, and of the many people who participated in SCOS during its early years.

We were able to recover photos for many of the awards, although we found numerous discrepancies. Small black and white photos were sometimes published when the awards were announced in the AOS Bulletin, or in reports about shows where AOS judging had taken place. Later, these small photos were sometimes included in the Register of Awards. Larger photos of awarded plants, but not always the same photos, were included in articles in the Bulletin. Some color photos ultimately found their way into OrchidPro and the official AOS databases that preceded it, but we have encountered many awards where the color photo in OrchidPro does not match the black and white photos published at the time of the awards, and in any case, many of the earlier color photos, in the form of digital scans from old slides whose present location is unknown, are of very bad quality. As these photos were taken, as far as we know, as part of the AOS judging program and for the use of AOS and its judging program, the implied copyright, if any, should remain with AOS, and, as an AOS affiliated society, SCOS presents them here with that understanding. For the early award photos, it is very rare to find any mention of the photographers.

The various ways that color slides have faded, and presumably also the various ways that the old slides have been scanned and adjusted, has required some difficult choices. The most common issue is an overall blue tint in the OrchidPro images, which can be adjusted to some extent. In addition, some of the images have simply lost color, and benefit from adjusting the saturation. When it seems clear that the image is the correct award photo, the award description has served as a useful guide in assessing the image and in determining whether adjustments should be attempted. In these situations, however, we hope that further investigation will eventually lead to the original color slides and new scans with more current technology.

Absent evidence to the contrary, any black and white photos published along with the awards in the AOS Bulletin are presumed to be the "official" award photos. However, we found examples where the photos published later turn out to be different shots of the same flower, and thus taken at the same judging session. It is presently unknown whether multiple photos from the same award were sometimes submitted to AOS. In some cases, it may be that both versions were cropped from different parts of a single original color slide.

The earliest slides we have found so far in the Pacific South awards slide collection at the Huntington Botanical Center are from 1966.

Green Giant 'Green Cynosure' HCC/AOS that looks very much like an award photo. Unfortunately, there are no photo credits either in the article itself, nor in this issue of the Bulletin. Also, the color in many of these illustrations is far greener than our experience would suggest. Nevertheless, we think this is likely the actual award photo. There seems to have been no other award for this cultivar, and the flowers are described as "two lime-green ... flowers ... ; a green-gold lip with lavender brush", matching the image. The digitized version of this page on the AOS web site has badly cropped. We were not able to locate the award slide.

OrchidPro (as Guarianthe Guatemalensis (Alba) 'Maya', presumably indicating the artificial hybrid) has complete information but lacks photo and incorrectly lists the award date as April 8, 1970 (summary listing) and April 9, 1970 (details), and states that the event was the 15^th Western Orchid Conference at Pasadena, CA. However, the actual 15^th Western Orchid Conference was held at Sacramento, CA, and several awards from that show were published under the date April 9, 1970. Published in Awards Quarterly 1(4):110 (October, 1970) with black-and-white photo, and in AOS Bulletin 39(9):830 (September, 1970). The award as published both times uses a small g in the species name, indicating that it was regarded as the natural hybrid, then properly Cattleya × guatemalensis, and now revised as Guarianthe × laelioides. The artificial hybrid (with the same parents, now Guarianthe skinneri × Guarianthe auriantiaca) is still, however, officially Guarianthe Guatemalensis, with a capital G.

But wait, there's more! As best we can determine, this plant was exhibited at San Diego, where it was judged on April 3, 1970, receiving a CBM/AOS award. Then it was exhibited at the Western Orchid Conference in Sacramento, where it was judged on April 9, 1970, receiving an HCC/AOS (award 19700484), for the same eight flowers on a single spike. The latter award was published in Awards Quarterly 2(1):5 (January, 1971). There is an excellent photograph in OrchidPro from the HCC award, but it is a closeup taken from a different angle and cannot be compared definitively with the very poor photograph from the CBM award. The confusion over the name continues: in OrchidPro, the CBM award (19700220) indicates the artificial hybrid Guatemalensis, while the HCC award (19700484 for the same plant and the same flowers) shows × laelioides, indicating the natural hybrid. As originally published in Awards Quarterly, however, both show guatemalensis with a small g, the natural hybrid.

Cattleya skinneri 'Casa Loma Linda Vista' CCM/AOS 83 points, exhibited by Fred and Kay Francis, Pasadena, CA. AOS Award Number 19700221. OrchidPro has complete information but lacks photo. The award slide turned up in materials donated by the family of Kay Francis.

We have come to believe that this plant came to Kay Francis as a division of what was then Cattleya skinneri 'Casa Luna', possibly from a nursery that used 'Casa Luna' as a varietal name for other plants, Casa Luna Orchids, in Beaufort, SC. Certainly there are many later awards (1993-2019) from all over the world for Cattleya skinneri 'Casa Luna'. From her notes (two separate lists of the same plants), she received it as Cattleya skinneri 'Casa Luna' with other plants from Jerry Kulaja of Grouse Point Shores, MI in May, 1967. Kay and her husband met Jerry and his wife at the Fifth World Orchid Conference in Long Beach in 1966 (they are on the list of Conference registrants), and they arranged to share some of their plants. For whatever reason, Kay decided that she should grow and show this plant as her own selection, and in some of her records and color slides, we find it denoted Cattleya skinneri 'Casa Luna' 'Linda Vista' or 'Casa Luna Linda Vista'. Linda Vista was the street name where she lived in Pasadena, CA. She still had this plant as late as 1979, and referred to it as "Cattleya skinneri, Casa Luna, 'Linda Vista' ", when she gave a division to "Sarah" (not yet identified, but likely a grower at some local orchid nursery). Somehow the name got corrupted when the award was made, and the cultivar name has come down to us in AOS records, on the award slide, and on the award certificate, as 'Casa Loma Linda Vista', thus conflating a local town name, Loma Linda, with Casa Luna and Linda Vista!

OrchidPro lacks this record, and this award number is occupied by an award for Ascocenda (now Vanda) Darcy Starr 'Peggy' HCC/AOS, April 21, 1970, Oakland, CA, exhibited by John Arhontes, published as 19700493 in Awards Quarterly 2(4):93 (October, 1971). However, the description and measurements that OrchidPro record refer to the present award! The species is now correctly known as Cattleya purpurata. The present award, for 'Whitlow', was Published in Awards Quarterly 2(1):12 (January, 1971; the color is described as "medium violet-blue"), not yet located in the AOS Bulletin. Is this the true "werkhauserii"? The name was originally applied to just two wild-collected plants that remained in private hands until 1954 (see our blog entry on this topic, Orchids Today and Yesterday, May-June 2020). We strongly suspect that many "werkhauserii" plants are not descendants of the original plants, but are color forms that, with a bit of wishful thinking, fall within the "ardósia" color group (i.e., the color of Brazilian slate), even though they are closer to the "roxo-violeta" (also known regionally as "aço", steel-colored) color group. A new award record is required for 'Whitlow' and the award for 'Peggy' needs to be corrected by adding the description and measurement published in Awards Quarterly.
