South Coast Orchid Society

Awards conferred by the American Orchid Society through the end of 1968 were published as a normal, if sometimes irregular feature in the AOS Bulletin (punctuated by such "disruptions" as the AOS Secretary's "trip to the West Coast" in 1950, for example), but also in a separate Register of Awards (one volume plus supplements I through VI, paged continuously). During the same period, Orchid Digest Corporation, through its affiliated societies, conducted its own judging program in our area, but the records of the ODC awards are more difficult to compile and will be presented separately. Starting in 1970, AOS awards were published in a separate journal called Awards Quarterly, but the AOS Bulletin continued to publish awards notices until November, 1975. On the present web page, the last of the awards published in the AOS Bulletin are noted. The AOS awards listed here serve to fill out the story of orchids as a hobby and business in Southern California, and of the many people who participated in SCOS during its early years.

We were able to recover photos for many of the awards, although we found numerous discrepancies. Small black and white photos were sometimes published when the awards were announced in the AOS Bulletin, or in reports about shows where AOS judging had taken place. Later, these small photos were sometimes included in the Register of Awards. Larger photos of awarded plants, but not always the same photos, were included in articles in the Bulletin. Some color photos ultimately found their way into OrchidPro and the official AOS databases that preceded it, but we have encountered many awards where the color photo in OrchidPro does not match the black and white photos published at the time of the awards, and in any case, many of the earlier color photos, in the form of digital scans from old slides whose present location is unknown, are of very bad quality. As these photos were taken, as far as we know, as part of the AOS judging program and for the use of AOS and its judging program, the implied copyright, if any, should remain with AOS, and, as an AOS affiliated society, SCOS presents them here with that understanding. For the early award photos, it is very rare to find any mention of the photographers.

The various ways that color slides have faded, and presumably also the various ways that the old slides have been scanned and adjusted, has required some difficult choices. The most common issue is an overall blue tint in the OrchidPro images, which can be adjusted to some extent. In addition, some of the images have simply lost color, and benefit from adjusting the saturation. When it seems clear that the image is the correct award photo, the award description has served as a useful guide in assessing the image and in determining whether adjustments should be attempted. In these situations, however, we hope that further investigation will eventually lead to the original color slides and new scans with more current technology.

Absent evidence to the contrary, any black and white photos published along with the awards in the AOS Bulletin are presumed to be the "official" award photos. However, we found examples where the photos published later turn out to be different shots of the same flower, and thus taken at the same judging session. It is presently unknown whether multiple photos from the same award were sometimes submitted to AOS. In some cases, it may be that both versions were cropped from different parts of a single original color slide.

The earliest slides we have found so far in the Pacific South awards slide collection at the Huntington Botanical Center are from 1966.

The solution to this puzzle is that the photo associated with this award in OrchidPro is in fact the photo from the 1980 AM award, award number 19801233. The two photos in OrchidPro are cropped differently and the color balance and contrast are different, but they derive from the same image. The award slide for the 1973 HCC award is very different. The award descriptions are of interest as well: "lilac-pink" for the 1973 award, "rose-pink" for the 1980 award.

OrchidPro has this award with a color photo, but under the wrong award number, 19730151, and with description and measurements of a very different plant ("Seven flowers with seven buds on one spike; upper third lavender-pink, remainder chartreuse; lip rust, green stripes in throat", and corresponding measurements). Evidently, the label from the 1974 award for Marlborough has been combined in OrchidPro with the description and measurements for some other plant awarded in 1973, and from the numerical range, the original occupant of 19730151 was one of the plants awarded at the Central California Orchid Society Show in Fresno, CA, March 16, 1973. The plant in question is found to be Vanda George Seddon 'Nada' AM/AOS, published in the AOS Bulletin 43(4):347 (April, 1974) as award number 73-151, but we were unable to locate this award in OrchidPro. OrchidPro does not have an award under the number 19740151, so part of the solution is to re-enter the data for each of these awards in OrchidPro under their correct, original numbers.

The present award, for Marlborough 'Indian Adventure', was published in Awards Quarterly 6(1):15 (January, 1975) (long description, but no photo), and in AOS Bulletin 44(1):64 (January, 1975) (no description, as was typical at that time). Once again, there is a problem with the photo in OrchidPro, which does not match the clearly labeled award slide. In this instance, OrchidWiz has additional photos, but here the confusion in only increased. The same plant exhibited in 1974 was exhibited at CSA eight days later, on January 22, 1974, and received a BM/CSA. There is a photo that may be from that CSA award in OrchidWiz (image #80607, award listed as HCC/CSA — but the spots on the dorsal sepal, while similarly distributed, do not match those on the AOS award slide). Perhaps it was a different division of 'Indian Adventure' that was exhibited by Fred Stewart at the CSA judging?

'Indian Adventure' also won another HCC/AOS with a higher score (79 points) on March 10, 1980, again exhibited by Fred Stewart, and the photo for that award in OrchidPro turns out to match the one for the 1974 HCC award in OrchidPro, but with better contrast and color balance. The same photo is found with the 1980 award when it was published in Awards Quarterly 12(2):120 (April, 1981). OrchidWiz does not show any other awards for 'Indian Adventure', but as this clone was definitely in cultivation for a number of years, it is possible that one or more of the photos are not actually official award photos.

What can be gleaned from the original description of the present award? There was a single flower on one spike, natural spread reported as 12.6 cm, and the dorsal sepal was 9.3 cm wide. The ratio of these two measurements shows that the dorsal sepal was 75.6% of the natural spread of the awarded flower in 1974. Measuring directly on the photo scanned from the award slide, the ratio was 73.1%. From the CSA photo, the ratio was 71.7%, and from the measurements reported with the CSA award in 1974 in OrchidWiz, 82.6%. For the measurements published for the 1980 award, the ratio is 82.5. The apparent discrepancies remain to be explained.

Photos of 'Indian Adventure' have been published at least five times. Besides the black-and-white photo of the 1980 award, it has appeared in Orchid Digest 59(3):149 (July, 1995, matching the 1980 award photo), twice in the Orchid Advocate, and also in at least one catalogue from Fred A. Stewart, Inc. (1977-1978, #171). Other Stewart catalogues have included photos of unspecified cultivars of Marlborough.

Now correctly a Rhyncholaeliocattleya. The situation in OrchidPro is more complicated than it first appeared. Award number 19740704, although it is labeled as Paphiopedilum tonsum 'Chadd's Ford', has the measurements and description ("Three flowers on one spike; light brown tepals with green overlay and bright green edge around petals; green tip on sepal; pink lip with bright yellow midsection and green edge; pink side lobes.") for Indian Treasure 'Radiant Beauty'. The same description and measurements are found in 19740926. The correct solution is to retrieve the correct description and measurements for 19740704, as published in Awards Quarterly 7(1):7 (January, 1976). The 1974 HCC/AOS award for 'Radiant Beauty' is not in OrchidWiz, but there is a later AM/AOS award, again to Fred Stewart, on August 23, 1976, at Long Beach, with a good photo, and the information and photo for that award are found in OrchidWiz. An additional complication is that the award slide shows the grex name as Indian Trails, a name that has never been registered. The correct name for this hybrid, as registered in 1972 by Fred A. Stewart, Inc., is Indian Treasure.
