Awards conferred by the American Orchid Society through the end of 1968 were published as a normal, if sometimes irregular feature in the AOS Bulletin (punctuated by such "disruptions" as the AOS Secretary's "trip to the West Coast" in 1950, for example), but also in a separate Register of Awards (one volume plus supplements I through VI, paged continuously). During the same period, Orchid Digest Corporation, through its affiliated societies, conducted its own judging program in our area, but the records of the ODC awards are more difficult to compile and will be presented separately. The AOS awards listed here serve to fill out the story of orchids as a hobby and business in Southern California, and of the many people who participated in SCOS during its early years.

We were able to recover photos for many of the awards, although we found numerous discrepancies. Small black and white photos were sometimes published when the awards were announced in the AOS Bulletin, or in reports about shows where AOS judging had taken place. Later, these small photos were sometimes included in the Register of Awards. Larger photos of awarded plants, but not always the same photos, were included in articles in the Bulletin. Some color photos ultimately found their way into OrchidPro and the official AOS databases that preceded it, but we have encountered many awards where the color photo in OrchidPro does not match the black and white photos published at the time of the awards, and in any case, many of the earlier color photos, in the form of digital scans from old slides whose present location is unknown, are of very bad quality. As these photos were taken, as far as we know, as part of the AOS judging program and for the use of AOS and its judging program, the implied copyright, if any, should remain with AOS, and, as an AOS affiliated society, SCOS presents them here with that understanding. For the early award photos, it is very rare to find any mention of the photographers.

The various ways that color slides have faded, and presumably also the various ways that the old slides have been scanned and adjusted, has required some difficult choices. The most common issue is an overall blue tint in the OrchidPro images, which can be adjusted to some extent. In addition, some of the images have simply lost color, and benefit from adjusting the saturation. When it seems clear that the image is the correct award photo, the award description has served as a useful guide in assessing the image and in determining whether adjustments should be attempted. In these situations, however, we hope that further investigation will eventually lead to the original color slides and new scans with more current technology.

Absent evidence to the contrary, any black and white photos published along with the awards in the AOS Bulletin are presumed to be the "official" award photos. However, we found examples where the photos published later turn out to be different shots of the same flower, and thus taken at the same judging session. It is presently unknown whether multiple photos from the same award were sometimes submitted to AOS. In some cases, it may be that both versions were cropped from different parts of a single original color slide.

The earliest slides we have found so far in the Pacific South awards slide collection at the Huntington Botanical Center are from 1966.

The form labeled as a variety or subspecies desboisiana is now regarded by some authorities, apparently, as Lycaste puntarenasensis. There is not even a searchable entry for desboisiana in Kew's database, Plants of the World Online ("POWO"), although POWO does list desboisiana as a synonym under their entry for puntarenasensis. OrchidWiz, among others, has followed this synonymy, which, as we discovered, seems not at all consistent with the literature.

The key publications bearing on the status of desboisiana appear to be: • Oakeley, H. F. (2007), A new infrageneric classification of Lycaste (Lindl.) and a checklist of species for the genus Lycaste, Orchid Digest 71:196-208 (October, 2007) — listing as a separate species the form puntarenasensis, which had been described by Jack Fowlie as a subspecies of Lycaste macrophylla (LASCA Leaves 14(2):45 (1964)), but not mentioning the form desboisiana at all! • Archila Morales, F. (2002), Nuevas combinaciones en el género Lycaste (Orchidaceae), Revista Guatemalensis 5(2):[58-66] — apparently the first author to assign the form puntarenasensis as a full species. • Archila Morales, F. (2003), Nuevas especies y nuevas combinaciones Lycaste Lindl. (Orchidaceae), Revista Guatemalensis 6(1):79-88, among other changes, raising the old subspecies desboisiana to the rank of species. These publications are discussed on the web pages of the "Manual de Plantas de Costa Rica" project of the Missouri Botanical Garden, especially those devoted to the project's newsletter, Cutting Edge.

What is the current status of the form desboisiana, originally described by the Belgian botanist Célestin Alfred Cogniaux (1841-1916) in 1897 as a variety of Lycaste macrophylla, from material forwarded to him by Monsieur François Desbois, from a plant received from Costa Rica by Monsieur Madoux? (Reference: • Chronique Orchidéenne, a monthly supplement to the Dictionnaire iconographique des orchidées, 1(1):4, January, 1897, brief description only.) • Fowlie, J. A. (1964), A Preliminary Clarification of Lycaste Macrophylla, LASCA Leaves 14(2):37-45 (Spring, 1964) — Here Dr. Fowlie discusses the previously published information about Lycaste macrophylla and its subspecies, including desboisiana: "Following the plates, descriptions and types of the authors who initially described the plants in question, it is now possible to recapitulate which forms were meant, correlating their information with our living collections of flowered material." Fowlie notes that the subspecies or "race" desboisiana is "almost wholly Costa Rican", and is a "very well marked form", "wholly an Atlantic watershed species" that may reach Northern Panama. He then formally describes a new subspecies puntarenasensis, from the area of this name in the south of Costa Rica (in the Pacific coastal mountain range now generally known as the "Cordillera Costeña", in the province of Puntarenas, Costa Rica, far removed from the areas where desboisiana was found), noting (in Latin) its similarity to desboisiana but with much longer pseudobulbs, deeply ridged, and completely deciduous.

In the general discussion of these forms, Fowlie notes that the puntarenasensis form is the only one known to him that is "totally deciduous in the dry season (Dec.-April)". "The flowers are very large and showy with uniform light olive sepals tipped light green, white petals suffused bright rose red distally and an unbelievable bright cinnabar red labellum." Also, regarding the flowers of desboisiana, they "have bright red spotting on the petals and reflexed portions of the midlobe of the labellum". Fowlie includes a black-and-white plate of puntarenasensis but no illustrations of desboisiana, and no measurements of either form. The type specimen for puntarenasensis was deposited in the Herbarium of the Los Angeles State and County Arboretum, F62CR43. Fowlie notes that he had access to plants he had collected, as well as those collected by Glenn Hiatt, in the "Arboretum Research Collection at Arcadia".

Also of interest, Fowlie, writing in 1964, says that the desboisiana form had recently been imported into the United States by Clarence Horich, while there is no indication that the puntarenasensis form had ever been imported, an observation that suggests the plants identified as desboisiana in horticulture in the 1970's were likely from the Atlantic side of Costa Rica, and not from the Pacific side.

Consequently, and until someone actually makes the case that the two forms should actually form a single taxon, and that its valid name should be puntarenasensis, the AOS award would more logically retain its present label, or else be changed to Lycaste desboisiana. In the award photo, in spite of the distortion of its colors, it is clear that that pseudobulbs are not strongly ridged, and the flowers certainly lack the "unbelievable bright cinnabar red labellum" from the original description of puntarenasensis.

What Dr. Fowlie thought about the status of the desboisiana form is not discussed at any length in his paper of 1964. But he was not finished with Lycaste! In 1970, he produced a monograph, a work of 90 pages in large format (11" × 14") and a small type-face (the format may have been dictated by the large plates; otherwise, the monograph would probably have been published as a "normal" book of about 360 pages), available from the author at his home address on Foothill Boulevard in La Cañada, CA, under the title, • The Genus Lycaste: Its Speciation, Distribution, Literature, and Cultivation – A Monographic Revision. At the time, Dr. Fowlie, a physician, was a Research Associate in the Botany Department at UCLA, one of those dedicated people with scientific training who had the ability, zeal, and means to turn their orchid hobby into a second career of botanical research and discovery. Fowlie's review begins with a lengthy discussion of the nature of taxonomic categories, and especially, his understanding of the designation of "species", and the relation of these categories to their biology, evolutionary history, and ecology. Today we might consider him a conservative in these matters; he preferred to see the various forms he encountered in his field work in Costa Rica as subspecies of Lycaste macrophylla, distinct in most specimens, but not to the extent that he could be comfortable treating them as separate species. He was aware, we think, that there had not been enough field work to establish in detail the actual distribution of the forms he had studied, nor the extent to which they might intergrade, if at all. These observations are followed by a detailed discussion of growing Lycaste in captivity. Following a key to the species, Fowlie discusses at length the individual species and subspecies, with plates, some in color, and photographs of flowers, habitat, etc. The form desboisiana, along with its alba form, is described in great detail. There is no doubt that this form is distinctive and well documented, and that it corresponds precisely to the specimen awarded in 1976. In addition to the locations where the desboisiana and puntarenasensis forms were then known (there is a long list), Fowlie notes that plants appearing to be natural hybrids between these two forms are "occasionally" found in the southern part of the range where desboisiana occurs, especially in Panama. He applies the term "hybrid swarm" to the intergrade form in the caption to his map showing the ranges of the main subspecies of macrophylla from his personal knowledge and documented collections, but it is important to note that the main text indicates the hybrid forms are encountered "occasionally"! His observations on these points demonstrate that he understood these forms as populations, sometimes intergrading, that were not of species rank, but sufficiently distinct to warrant their description as subspecies.

As of 2007, at the time his review was published in Orchid Digest, Dr. Henry F. Oakeley was about to publish a detailed account of the species of Lycaste. In fact, publication did occur, as • Lycaste, Ida and Anguloa: The Essential Guide (2008), which provides extended discussion and clarification, along with additional background on how these forms should be understood. Dr. Oakeley's monograph does indeed deal with the questions surrounding macrophylla and the diverse subspecies, varieties, and forms that have at one time or another been referred to it. (However, he seems to have missed the two publications of Archila Morales 2002 and 2003, cited above, which will need to be integrated into Oakeley's proposed synonymy.) The main point for the Costa Rican forms turns on the identification of a plant depicted in 1888 in • The Orchid Album (Warner and Williams, plate 306), in a plate labeled Lycaste plana Measuresiana, supposedly a "Native of Bolivia". Oakeley realized that the plant depicted was not the same plana that had been described repeatedly on different occasions by Lindley as both macrophylla and plana; instead, Oakeley concluded it was the the first recognizable illustration of what Cogniaux would later describe as desboisiana. Cogniaux himself noted that his desboisiana was very similar to Williams' measuresiana, but that the latter was from Bolivia, while desboisiana was from Costa Rica. All Williams knew of the plant, apparently, is that it was "in the fine collection of R. H. Measures, Esq., The Woodlands, Streatham". Oakeley here makes the inductive leap, that the stated provenance of measuresiana was incorrect, and if that is the case, the rest of Oakeley's taxonomic treatment follows logically. The mislabeled (?) plate had not been noticed before, as far as is known, and, if one accepts the apparent varietal name Measuresiana as an actual taxonomic entity (perhaps noting that the usage of taxonomic and cultivar names at the time was extremely flexible), it becomes logical to treat desboisiana as a junior synonym for a new combination, Lycaste measuresiana. Oakeley had perhaps not wished to undertake the announcement of this change in his Orchid Digest review, as the matter would necessarily be quite complicated, because of the generations of confusion that attend some of the names. Dr. Fowlie had not noticed this problem, but, unlike Dr. Oakeley, preferred to keep the species macrophylla, with its wide distribution and many varieties, intact. Oakeley, on the other hand, came to view the old macrophylla as a set of several distinct forms with different ranges and habitats, so that it made sense to split some of them out of macrophylla, leaving the latter limited to a smaller number of forms from South America, and raising the Central American varieties to specific rank. Thus, the former desboisiana, treated by some as a separate species, becomes Lycaste measuresiana, and the puntarenasensis subspecies described by Fowlie becomes Lycaste puntarenasensis, as had already been proposed, apparently unknown to Oakeley, by Archila Morales (but see below, on the problem of the effective dates of these publications, which would likely give Oakeley priority).

Having worked through this part of the story, it remains to be determined whether this reorganization will prove stable. If it does, the awarded plant would better be labeled Lycaste measuresiana 'Lance'. Perhaps the POWO team can be persuaded to revise their treatment of these Lycaste species.

Trouble in Taxonomy: Misleading Publication Dates?

Mention was made in the discussion about Lycaste taxonomy of the journal Revista Guatemalensis. The newsletter of the Manual de Plantas de Costa Rica took notice of an article in Orchids 86(7):496-498 (July, 2017, Franco Pupulin and Adam Karremans, "The New Botanical Refugium: Ida (Sudamlycaste) andreettae"), about which the Manual staff reports that there are "highly suspicious differentials between printed dates and actual delivery dates for issues of the obscure, vanity-press journal Revista Guatemalensis, sometimes involving potentially significant nomenclatural consequences". While the genus name Ida (containing the more "botanical" species of Lycaste) was published as a new genus by Ryan and Oakley in 2003, it was claimed that the genus name Sudamerlycaste was created in 2002 by Archila Morales, and that, therefore, the valid name for this group was Sudamerlycaste. This name has become extremely popular. In reality, however, it appears that the relevant issue of the Revista did not actually appear until after 2007 — even the Costa Rican botanists were unaware of it until at least that late — , so that the claim of prior publication cannot be sustained. In fact, the earliest date when any major library received the November, 2002 issue of this journal was in December, 2008, and the December, 2002 issue was not received until after January, 2009. Whether this discrepancy will work its way through the various taxonomic authorities and the orchid world remains to be seen. Many of us still haven't really got past Epidendrum and Odontoglossum. If the "true" publication dates are as late as claimed, the attribution of certain Lycaste names and taxonomic decisions would have to be altered as well.

One possibility is that the present award was at some point assigned to Angraecum eburneum, prior to decision by Kew to separate longicalcar from eburneum, based on the observation that these two forms rely on different pollinators, and longicalcar comes from much higher elevations and thus requires far less heat that eburneum in cultivation. The species name on the present award should therefore be changed to match that of award number 19760832.
