South Coast Orchid Society

Awards conferred by the American Orchid Society through the end of 1968 were published as a normal, if sometimes irregular feature in the AOS Bulletin (punctuated by such "disruptions" as the AOS Secretary's "trip to the West Coast" in 1950, for example), but also in a separate Register of Awards (one volume plus supplements I through VI, paged continuously). During the same period, Orchid Digest Corporation, through its affiliated societies, conducted its own judging program in our area, but the records of the ODC awards are more difficult to compile and will be presented separately. The AOS awards listed here serve to fill out the story of orchids as a hobby and business in Southern California, and of the many people who participated in SCOS during its early years.

We were able to recover photos for many of the awards, although we found numerous discrepancies. Small black and white photos were sometimes published when the awards were announced in the AOS Bulletin, or in reports about shows where AOS judging had taken place. Later, these small photos were sometimes included in the Register of Awards. Larger photos of awarded plants, but not always the same photos, were included in articles in the Bulletin. Some color photos ultimately found their way into OrchidPro and the official AOS databases that preceded it, but we have encountered many awards where the color photo in OrchidPro does not match the black and white photos published at the time of the awards, and in any case, many of the earlier color photos, in the form of digital scans from old slides whose present location is unknown, are of very bad quality. As these photos were taken, as far as we know, as part of the AOS judging program and for the use of AOS and its judging program, the implied copyright, if any, should remain with AOS, and, as an AOS affiliated society, SCOS presents them here with that understanding. For the early award photos, it is very rare to find any mention of the photographers.

The various ways that color slides have faded, and presumably also the various ways that the old slides have been scanned and adjusted, has required some difficult choices. The most common issue is an overall blue tint in the OrchidPro images, which can be adjusted to some extent. In addition, some of the images have simply lost color, and benefit from adjusting the saturation. When it seems clear that the image is the correct award photo, the award description has served as a useful guide in assessing the image and in determining whether adjustments should be attempted. In these situations, however, we hope that further investigation will eventually lead to the original color slides and new scans with more current technology.

Absent evidence to the contrary, any black and white photos published along with the awards in the AOS Bulletin are presumed to be the "official" award photos. However, we found examples where the photos published later turn out to be different shots of the same flower, and thus taken at the same judging session. It is presently unknown whether multiple photos from the same award were sometimes submitted to AOS. In some cases, it may be that both versions were cropped from different parts of a single original color slide.

The earliest slides we have found so far in the Pacific South awards slide collection at the Huntington Botanical Center are from 1966. At least one award slide dating from 1964 has come to our attention in another collection. The slides seem to have been widely distributed, both within the judging community and also, at least occasionally, to the exhibitors themselves, to such an extent that many collections of orchid memorabilia turn out to contain at least a few identifiable AOS, ODC, or CSA award slides.

There seems to be a general consensus that this cultivar is in fact Paphiopedilum platyphyllum and not a genuine stonei; one story is that it, or similar plants, turned up in a shipment of the real, wide-leaved form of stonei and was thought by some to be a hybrid between stonei and kolopakingii, which, if true, would make it a naturally-occurring version of the hybrid Paphiopedilum Memoria Albert Eickhoff. There are at least two published discussions of its status: Orchids 73(4):285 (April, 2004), in an article about "New Paphiopedilums" (Guido J. Braem), expressing serious doubts about the validity of the species platyphyllum, and Orchid Digest 82(4):215 (October, 2018), in Harold Koopowitz's "Annotated Checklist of Paphiopedilum Species", with the observation that, in spite of its similarity to stonei and kolopakingii, the only known population (but most of that population was apparently harvested when the plant was originally discovered in 1964) is apparently "well outside of the ranges" of those species, and therefore unlikely to be a hybrid. The cultivar 'Ruth Kennedy' was the plant obtained by Dr. George Kennedy (he referred to it Paphiopedilum stonei var. latifolium), a professor of geology in California, from a division that Norwood Shaffer of Baltimore, MD had in turn obtained from Fumimasa Sugijama in Japan, who had received 15 plants of the original collection from its discover, identified either as "Toyoshima", or as "Dr. Yoshishige Tachibana". Apparently, all of the platyphyllum plants in the US are divisions of this plant, or possibly seedlings from selfing it.

Among the more baffling cases in the photographic record of orchid awards, OrchidWiz has four images of this cultivar, each a different and very distinct color: pink (image #291804, a copy of the photo in OrchidPro), white with very faint lavender tints around the edges (image #283588, a modern greenhouse photo credited to Kurtis Iwata), lavender shading to white with a huge yellow-green throat (image #178418, credited to Richard Pippen), and chartreuse with some red at the edges of the lip and petals (image #55363, credited to the collection of Steve McNerney, and thus presumably from the collection of Fred A. Stewart, Inc.). The award description (and this is the only known award for this hybrid) indicates "very light cream yellow, petals with a very light edging of rose, lip cream yellow with canary yellow throat, Brasso-type fringe. The OrchidPro photo and the first of the OrchidWiz images are mirror images of the black-and-white image published with the original award description in Awards Quarterly 11(4):155. The others are not the same, awarded flower. The strong pink color is probably another example of the strange "fading" that affected so many photos from the Santa Barbara show over a period of many years. We strongly suspect that the third of the OrchidWiz photos is a different plant entirely, and that the fourth is simply a bad scan of a different flowering of the same cultivar 'Rene'.

There is, however, another possibility: the black-and-white photo in Awards Quarterly might have been misidentified when it was published. The black-and-white photo does not look like it derives from a typical photo of a "very light cream yellow" flower, which would typically have been rendered in black and white in much brighter and contrasting tones. The color slide, if it can be found, would help to verify the identification.

This hybrid was registered by Dr. H. H. Edelbrock of La Cañada, CA in 1972, as Yamadara Midnight Magic. Yamadara hybrids continued to be registered under this spelling until January-March, 2003. At almost the same time, the early intergeneric name Adamara, coined for the same combination of genera, was rediscovered for a second time, and the opinion about how to form a nothogeneric name when the name being commemorated ends with ‑a, with the result that "Yamadaara" (the corrected spelling, retaining the extra ‑a‑) was demoted to a synonym of Adamara, and, apparently, without an official notice that Yamadara should be regarded as an incorrect spelling of Yamadaara. The convention of retaining the extra ‑a‑ began in orchid registrations about 1969, the first such name appearing in the "New Orchid Hybrids" lists being Perreiraara. The last such name that was created without the extra ‑a‑ was Kagawara, in 1968. For a very long time, then, 1969-2003, the names later to be spelled with ‑aara remained exactly as they had been spelled when they were created; no corrections were made. As a result, the AOS awards index 1932-1989 contains both types of names, consistent with when they had been created, ‑ara for those created before 1969, ‑aara for the later ones. After 2003, most of these names were tacitly changed to the ‑aara form, even though the change in spelling seems never to have been officially noted. It should be understood, too, that most of these names have not survived, due to the many revisions of the component genera, thus making the spelling issue go away.

Why the confusion about ‑ara and ‑aara? There are very old, traditional rules about the formation of Latinized versions of proper names. A prominent rule, still found in most of the official "codes" for taxonomic nomenclature, says that, when a suffix beginning with ‑a is added to a name that also ends with ‑a, the extra ‑a‑ should be removed. The codes governing purely horticultural names, however, seem not to contain or accept this rule, at least for the ‑ara suffix. Similar rules have come into play about suffixes added to names ending in ‑er, resulting in a long tug-of-war between sanderana and sanderiana, the latter being considered "correct" at the present time.

We have not yet located the explanation, if there is one, for the change in the nomenclature for this particular award. It could easily be a question of whether the moreliana form traditionally placed in the species spectabilis is sufficiently distinct to be considered a species in its own right.

The source of the new opinion about moreliana appears to be Luciana A. Carlini-Garcia, Cásio van den Berg, and Paulo S. Martins (2002), A morphometric analysis of floral characteristics in Miltonia specabilis and Miltonia spectabilis var. moreliana (Maxillariaea: Oncidiinae), Lindleyana 17:122-129. The authors were able to assemble a set of voucher material from 129 individual plants of known provenance from the coastal regions of Brazil, ranging from the southern part of the state of Bahia to the state of São Paulo, a total of two populations of moreliana (but one represented only by a single plant) and five of the typical form of spectabilis (but one represented only by a single plant) and that had been grown together under uniform conditions. They measured 32 different floral characteristics and performed various statistical analyses, which, not surprisingly, showed that moreliana (initially identified as belonging to that variety solely by flower color) tended to have larger flowers, and, especially, a much wider lip (the width of the lip was the metric that had the least amount of overlap between moreliana and the other specimens in the study). In addition, it was noted that the main blooming season for moreliana (but the data concern only the sampled populations) as several months earlier than for the other sampled populations. Based on the observation that it was possible to distinguish moreliana from the other specimens morphologically, and given the fact that the two forms apparently do not occur together in the study area (but the discussion on this point is quite brief, and does not cover all reported populations of spectabilis nor even those of moreliana), the authors concluded that "the variety moreliana should be treated as a good species", adding a diagnostic key that includes the numerical range for each metric. Whether it is a good idea to treat every form that can be distinguished morphologically as a separate species is surely subject to a long discussion. Pending the outcome of such a discussion within, say, the Oncidium alliance, it seems preferable to retain moreliana as a distinct "variety" within the species spectabilis.

Phalaenopsis bellina was not recognized as a separate species until 1995, when Christenson moved several varieties from violacea. The forms that look like the present 'Dogwood' cultivar are now generally regarded as bellina, but the situation in nature may turn out to be more complicated than originally believed. For example, the bellina forms were thought to occur only in Borneo, and the forms remaining in violacea only on the Malay peninsula; more recently, it has been reported that both forms occur in both locations. While the distinction between the two forms is certainly handy for horicultural purposes, whether there are really two species in a biological sense is not clear. There is some risk in changing the species name for old awards when a taxonomic split has occurred, without knowing the provenance of the awarded plant.

Fortunately, Kay Francis obtained a copy of the award slide (it is clearly labeled as such), which was donated by her family, and from which we have made a new scan. The same sky-blue image is in OrchidWiz, image #292149, obviously copied from OrchidPro or one of the databases that preceded it.

After the shock of the sky-blue Cattleya wore off, we noticed that this is not precisely the same photograph, but exactly how was the "blue" version made to have the same orientation and shadows with respect to the background, while removing the image of the table top? Finally, the hoax was revealed: some adept but misguided photo editor has systematically replaced the image of the table top with "cloned" sections of the image of the wooden background, and pasted them in such a way that they fit almost exactly, except for a small rectangle in the lower left corner of the image. A couple extra leaves, or ghosts of leaves, also appear below the main part of the plant. The key to seeing how this was done is to focus on the irregularities in the wood grain below the right side of the plant; once the repeats in the pattern are found, it is easy to work out the rest of the deception.

There are many photos in OrchidPro where a bluish color has been exaggerated by inappropriate adjustments to the color balance. These are usually easy to spot. So far, the present award record is the only instance we have found where a counterfeit "blue orchid" has been so diligently forged.

Burrageara Lyoth 'Whatcroft Hall' AM/AOS 86 points, exhibited by R. B. Dugger, Solana Beach, CA. AOS Award Number 19800790. OrchidPro has a different award under this number, for Prosthechea Marina, San Antonio monthly judging, June 28, 1980; the award for Burrageara Lyoth (as Oncidium Lyoth) is found under award number 19801356, with complete information and color photo. Published in Awards Quarterly 12(4):291 (October, 1981). OrchidWiz seems not to have this award in any form. The parentage of this plant, as published in Awards Quarterly, is "Cha. nobilis × Oda. Felicia", which, at the time, should have been stated as Charlesworthara Nobilis × Odontioda Felicia, but there is no registered hybrid with this parentage. Instead, the correct parentage is apparently Charlesworthara Nobilis × Odontoglossum Felicia, which was registered in 1936 by Charlesworth, Ltd. as Burrageara Lyoth, which at some point became Wilsonara Lyoth (1936). Recently, a number of suggested changes in the taxonomy have found their way, sometimes very gradually, into award records and hybrid registration, in particular, involving parts of the old Odontoglossum that we thought had already been submerged into Oncidium, into a different genus, Cyrtochilum (see Lindleyana 16(2):113-139 (2001), in which phylogenetic relationships among various species were established, but the change in nomenclature does not seem to have caught on until much later). As a result of the apparent acceptance of yet another revised concept of Cyrtochilum, the awarded plant now becomes Cyrtocidium Lyoth (1936). Cyrtocidium was established in 2003 (Orchid Review Supplement 111(1252):59), but some of the plants at one time (wrongly?) assigned to this nothogenus have since been moved elsewhere, especially as a result of the transfer of a number of species from Oncidium to Gomesa in 2009. Apparently, some hybrids were wrongly believed to belong in Cyrtocidium because of confusion between the old Cyrtocidium flexuosum Kunth, Nov. Gen. Sp. 1:350 (1815) (treated as a valid species by Dalström in 2001) and the entirely separate Oncidium flexuosum (Kunth) Lindl. (1820), which is now Gomeza flexuosa. A similar false synonymy may have affected a couple other species involved in "Cyrtocidium" hybrids as well.
