Paphiopedilum elliottianum 'Charles Edwards', October 1970, roll 197010H4 slide 4. Dr. Jack Fowlie reported in Orchid Digest 44(2):70-76 (March, 1980) that the "Paph. elliottianum 'Charles E.' " and similar of commerce was in fact always a mislabeled clone of Paph. rothschildianum, and not the true elliottianum whose type sheet from 1892 still exists at Kew, a wild-collected specimen of which had recently been discovered, matching the type.
Paphiopedilum elliottianum 'Charles Edwards', side view, October 1970. roll 197010H4 slide 5. Dr. Jack Fowlie reported in Orchid Digest 44(2):70-76 (March, 1980) that the "Paph. elliottianum 'Charles E.' " and similar of commerce was in fact always a mislabeled clone of Paph. rothschildianum, and not the true elliottianum whose type sheet from 1892 still exists at Kew.
Paphiopedilum rothschildianum ['Cowan'], "Lloyd DeGarmo, plant of Lee Lenz", at the Southland Orchid Show and 13th Western Orchid Congress, Arcadia, CA, April 4, 1968, roll 196804 slide 12, 126 format. The plant received CCM/AOS, AOS records credit it to Lee W. Lenz, with cultivar name 'Cowan'. DeGarmo probably took the picture of the awarded plant at the show, and the Keyes obtained the slide from him. This is not the award slide; another slide from the Keyes collection is a duplicate of the official award slide found at the Huntington Botanical Center.
Paphiopedilum rothschildianum ['Cowan'], Duplicate Slide 15, made May 1968, copy of the award slide, CCM/AOS, April 4, 1968, Southland Orchid Show and 13th Western Orchid Congress, Arcadia, CA, exhibited by Lee W. Lenz, Claremont, CA.
Paphiopedilum rothschildianum 'Charles E.' K70U1, August 1970, roll 197008 slide 7. The same cultivar has been listed as 'Charles Edwards' and 'Charles Edwin Edwards', with the species either as rothschildianum or elliottianum. The earliest award was HCC/AOS HCC/ODC, as rothschildianum, July 20, 1965, at Oakland monthly judging, Oakland, CA, exhibited by Mr. and Mrs. Charles E. Edwards, San Francisco, CA. Given that provenance, it is hard to understand the collection number K70U1 listed on this slide, unless it means that the Keyes acquired it in 1970 as a division of the plant that had been imported by Mr. Edwards from an "U"nknown location. Species described in 1892.
