Kay Francis Photo Gallery: Cattleya skinneri

Current nomenclature: Guarianthe skinneri

While Kay must have had other cultivars of the typical skinneri, the one she called 'Casa Luna' 'Linda Vista' (thus, a sort of double cultivar name) was clearly the most important. However, she obtained a C. skinneri, not otherwise described, from Mary Holt King, probably in 1956, with a notation that she later gave it to her daughter. She received a division of C. skinneri 'Casa Luna' from Jerry Kulaja on May 24, 1967. A cultivar of this name, which, like other orchids with the designation Casa Luna, presumably originated at Casa Luna Orchids, Beaufort, SC, has received a number of awards since 1993, but its history has not been discovered. In fact, Kay's notes from 1967 are by far the earliest mention we have found. For whatever reason, when she exhibited this plant, she kept the original cultivar name 'Casa Luna' and appended her own designation, 'Linda Vista'. When her plant was awarded CCM/AOS on April 17, 1970 at the San Diego County Orchid Society Show, the cultivar name was rendered in error on the award certificate, 'Casa Loma Linda Vista', thus conflating the original cultivar name with the geographic name Loma Linda and with Kay's designation 'Linda Vista'.
